Sonya's Story

Maya Angelou once said, "The first time someone shows you who they are, believe them!" I keep this statement pretty close to my heart these days. If I had know this early on into this journey, I would not have allowed many a "waist of time" into my space. I have no regrets, however, I have to admit I find people to be quite interesting for the most part. Really, I do. I am the mother of four amazing children. But I suppose all mother's think their children are amazing, huh? My oldest graduates this year (2011) and I couldn't be more proud. She has been accepted into a really nice university and plans to study International Relations. She speaks fluent French and was God-given a remarkable command for languages. She picks up on them quickly and speaks like a native! Not at all like an American speaking the language. At every competition she has entered, she had won first place. I don't know what she will do in life, but trust me, she will do it well. My younger three, two girls and a boy are triplets. Yes, I said triplets! Two of them place soccer. My daughter enjoys the game and has fun but my son is absolutely obsessed! And that's OBSESSED with a capital "O!" His entire conversation (and existance) is all tied into the sport and he is a star! The "Trips" are a joy to be around and are absolutely hilarious! Quick humor and well-timed. They tell it like it is and shoot straight from the hip. No games. I love that about them. I see bits and pieces of myself in all of my children as well as qualities I wish I had. In other words, I teach them and they teach me as well. I use to wonder why God allowed certain things to happen. I no longer do that. Afterall, He is God. Who am I to question. Now I look for the lesson in it all, what I can learn...the message, how I can become better in order to fully develop into a woman of grace and virtue. For the most part, I have spent the past years trying to raise good children to become good citizens and to be of service. To leave this world better tha...Expand for more
n it was when they came into it. Those are the qualities I look for in people. Now that my children are gaining their independance and getting older, I am busy trying to raise me. LOL... I am working on my first novel. I have always been fascinated with the written word. If ever I find myself stressed, I just walk into a Barnes and Nobel and instantly I am cured. I really enjoyed attending Laney. I saw it as an institution of rich history and tradition not to mention the fact that the people were so damn cool. Who knows, perhaps I wanted to be cool too. I think I fell short...lol, however, my fellow classmates in my eyes are still so damn cool. Anyway, for the most part, I came there at a time when I really needed laughter in my life. I had never met so many people who had such incrediable humor, so free and so willing to laugh at themselves sometimes. Being there taught me not to take life so seriously. A lesson I am still learning. Hmmmm...Let's see, you know what makes me cringe? When I come to Homecoming and I don't remember everyone's name. Especially when they are kind enough to remember mine and their faces are so recognizable. I rarely visit home. So when I do, I try to soak in as much of it as I can in the small amount of time I have there. So, don't take it the wrong way or read too much into it. Like I said, I find people to be quite interesting. Hahahahaha...sorry, for some reason that made me laugh. Currently, I see this time in life as a time of transition. A time to really live, take a moment to just breathe, to just slow down a bit, evaluate the people in my life, those who have earned the privelege to belong and those who have over-stayed their welcome...to look at the many opportunities before me and to walk through every open door without fear. I understand now that I have a lot to look forward to and that the past is no longer going to hinder my growth, but guide me. I have to admit, I've been truly blessed and ife is good. I love you all... ~~Sonya
