Brad's Story
Life as of January 2017
My Spouse
Seong Yol Kim, my wife of almost 30 years, was a US Government language instructor in Seoul, she has long since resigned and has been with me at my postings in Prague, NYC, and now Seoul again. She did not join me in Iraq or Pakistan. Seong Yol and our youngest, Faithe, stayed in California with my oldest, Christina, while I did unaccompanied tours. Faithe is studying literature at CSU Long Beach and recently wrapped up a semester abroad in London. She should graduate this May. Christina is a state board certified cosmetologist working as a freelancer, hair and makeup. Another daughter, Yaeri, graduated from UCLA in 2011 and until recently worked in management/buying for Shinsaegae Department Store chain in Seoul. She recently moved back to the US. I work at the US Embassy in Seoul, running the routine services section of the American Citizen Services part. Right before this I was in Islamabad, Pakistan, as the Consular Fraud Prevention Unit Chief. We have been trying to get back to Seoul for a long time, so this job as the Deputy Chief of American Citizen Services is perfect. In August of 2017 we will leave Korea for a year in the US studying Chinese and then we head to Shenyang, China where I will be the Consular Chief for 3 years-2018-2021.
Our Pets
A standard Korean black cat "Komi" and a standard American shorthair black cat "Ebony" that we inherited from my parents. They stay in California.

adopted in Yaeri, also 28, graduated from UCLA 2011. All 3 are bilingual (Korean and English).
My Job, First the army for 20 years, 21 days. I was a translator-interpreter, English/Korean. I retired in January 04 and started work a govt defense contractor right away. One year later I was sworn in as a Vice Consul/Second Secretary in the U.S. Foreign Service. I completed my initial 2 year consular tour in summer 2007, with over 30,000 people interviewed for visas to the US, both in Korea and in Guangzhou, China. My next posting was lovely Baquba, Iraq, of all places, for a year. My wife and kids stayed in our new (for us) home in Fullerton while I did my one year tour in rural Iraq. I completed Czech language training for a 2 year tour as a consular officer in Prague in June 09, and then moved on to a two year stint as an adjudications team supervisor at the NYC Passport Agency. My tour as fraud prevention manager in Pakistan was very busy but it went by fast.. This three year tour in Korea has been been busy- I have been attending a Korean graduate school at night working on a masters relating to North Korean studies.
20 years in uniform
14 years in Korea, military
1 year as a govt contractor in Korea
5 years as a Foreign Service Officer in Korea including this tour
1 year in Iraq as a Political Reporting Officer
followed by 9 months in DC studying Czech, which is much harder than Korean, in my opinion.
I was in Prague for two years.
I was in NYC for 21 months.
Pakistan for 366 days total .
Seoul is slated to be a three year tour after that. My lifetime total for Korea will be 20 years then.
Nice work if you can get it.
