Bradley's Story

As most of you know, I've been in the Marine Corps since graduating high school. The following is a biorgraphy of my career to date: Chief Warrant Officer-5 Garfield enlisted in the Marine Corps on 24 June 1982, and underwent recruit training at MCRD San Diego, CA. Graduating as Series Honorman, he was meritoriously promoted to Private First Class. CWO Garfield was then assigned to Infantry Training School, Camp Pendleton, CA., where he received the MOS of 0331 (machine-gunner). CWO Garfield, again, graduated with honors, and was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Lance Corporal. He then received orders to 2nd Bn, 8th Marines, in October of 1982. He was assigned to Echo Company, and underwent pre-deployment training with the 22nd MAU. In October of 1983, he participated in operation Urgent Fury--the liberation of the island of Grenada. After 7 days in Grenada, he was back on-board the USS Guam en route to Beirut, Lebanon. After spending four months ashore with the Multi-National Peacekeeping Forces in Beirut, he returned to Camp LeJeune and was reassigned to 1st Bn, 8th Marines to participate in another deployment. During this deployment he was promoted to the rank of Corporal. CWO Garfield returned to Camp LeJeune, once again, and was honorably discharged in June of 1985. CWO Garfield re-enlisted in the Marine Corps in August of 1987, and was assigned to 3rd Bn, 6th Marines, for duty as a machine gunner. Six months later, he received orders to the Naval School, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) at Indian Head, MD. In September of 1987, he graduated from EOD School and was assigned to MCB, Camp Fuji, Japan. During this one-year tour, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. In October of 1988, he received orders to MCAS Yuma, AZ., for duty with the Station EOD team. While assigned there, he attended numerous MOS and civilian schools, and also attended Arizona Western Community College. In August of 1992, he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant. In November of 1992, he received orders to 2nd FSSG, CLNC. While assigned to 2d FSSG, he was assigned to the 22nd and 24th MEUs (SOC), participating in operations Provide Promise and Continue Hope (Bosnia and Somalia, respectively). CWO Garfield volunteered for, and received orders to, Marine Security Guard (MSG) School in December of 1995. He graduated from MSG School in March of 1996 and was assigned as the Detachment Commander at the American Embassy Maputo, Mozambique, assuming command on 23 March 1996. After completing a successful tour in Maputo, he received orders to the American Embassy Montevideo, Uruguay, and assumed command there on 7 July 1997. CWO Garfield was promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant on 1 Aug 1998, and was shortly thereafter notified of his selection to Warrant Officer for FY-99. CWO Garfield completed TBS on 26 May 1999, graduating with honors. CWO Garfield served as the MWSS 274, MWSG 27, and 2d MAW EOD Officer from 4 June 1999 thru 7 Jul 2001. He was then transferred to H&HS Company, MCAS Cherry Point as the MCABE EOD Officer. CWO Garfield served in this capacity for three years, providing EOD support to the installation and 18 counties in eastern North Carolina. In June of 2004, CWO Garfield was reassigned to MWSS 274 for duties as the MWSS 274, MWSG 27, and 2d MAW EOD Officer. In September he was transferred to MWSS 271 in preparation for the unit's impending deployment to OIF. He oversaw and facilitated the pre-deployment training and preparation of his EOD team for this challenging task. His team deployed to Iraq on 7 February 2005. On 14 May 2005, CWO Garfield was med-evaced from Iraq after being involved in a roadside IED attack, which involved a 155mm projectile that blew up on him at a distance of five feet.
