Richard's Story
After graduating from San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara, California in 1973, I enlisted in the United States Navy for four years. During that time I was stationed aboard the USS SIMON LAKE home ported in Rota, Spain for two years and the last two years of my enlistment I was stationed in Cecil Field, Florida attached to a naval air squadron which was deployed aboard the USS AMERICA (CV-66). My most memorable experiences in the navy were living on shore in Rota, Spain, three day cruise aboard a nuclear submarine, the six-month Mediterranean deployment aboard the USS America, an aircraft carrier, and a six week deployment crossing the equator to Rio De Janeiro, Brazil from Norfolk, Virginia.
After my discharge in July 1977, I used my veterans’ educational benefit and attended Santa Barbara City College and earned my A. A. degree in 1978. Thereafter, I transferred to San Francisco State University where I obtained my B. A. degree in International Relations in 1980.
A couple years later while working San Francisco in a bank, I was interested in law and took a paralegal class at San Francisco State and the instructor who was also an attorney told me that I have the potential to be a good lawyer and encouraged me to take the LSAT and apply to law school.
After taking my LSAT, I applied and was accepted to attend Golden Gate University School of Law in San Francisco....Expand for more
I was able to finance my education by using my veterans’ education benefit and when that ended after my first year, I was able to get paid working in the law library at the law school. Upon my graduation in 1985 in which I graduated in the top half of my class. I became the first in my extended family to obtain a post graduate degree.
After passing the California Bar, I began my legal career as attorney law as an associate attorney with a plaintiff's personal injury law firm in San Jose, California. At this time I started to develop a serious relationship with a woman named Susan Fong who I met at San Francisco State while we were students and was currently living with her family in Las Vegas, NV. Her family have been living in Las Vegas since the early 1950s. Her mother was the first Asian elementary school teacher in Las Vegas back in the early 1950s and she was also the first Asian in Nevada to win a statewide public office as Regent to the University of Nevada. Susan convinced me to move to Las Vegas. So in 1988, I studied and passed the Nevada bar and moved to Las Vegas where I practiced law with another plaintiff's law firm.
In 1990 we got married. Several years later, I started my own law practice as a solo practitioner. I had the opportunity to brief and argue a case before the Nevada Supreme Court.
Today, I am retired from active practice and currently living the good life.
