Brenda's Story

Life I never did graduate from Shoreline because I was too busy at that time taking care of my dying mother so I missed a lot of school. I was 16 when she died at the beginning of my Junior year. I missed first semester, completed second, and went first semester of my Senior year before I dropped out. During the first part of my Junior year I tried to go to school but ended up walking out in tears and I can't tell you how many times the driving instructor at school (can't remember his name) picked me up with students in the car and took me home. He was very kind to me. Mom died Oct 3, 1958 and my grandfather came from Tennessee for her funeral and I ended up going home with him despite mom telling me never to go live with him. While there, I didn't stay with him very long. I lived with a family for a few weeks, stayed with my Aunt, contacted my dad in Kentucky and he and his wife and children came and got me and I lived with them for a few weeks. They were alcoholics and they just wanted me to babysit the children so I bought a bus ticket and went back to Tennessee. My grandfather picked me up at the bus station. I told him my tonsils were bad so he put me in the hospital and had my tonsils taken out. After a short recouperation period with my brother's aunt and uncle I went back to Seattle. I'd had enough of that part of the family. My sister was just five when mom died so she went to live with some very kind people and they later adopted her. I stayed with them for a few months, met a cute sailor and married him in 1960 in Nebraska. We were at a dance one night in , I believe, Schyler, NE and I was very pregnant at the time. I was really shocked to see Brenda Berg at the dance having a great time. Who would believe I...Expand for more
would find a classmate from Seattle in Nebraska! My first baby boy, Jim was born in Colby Kansas and then we went back to NE where my first daughter, Terri was born in Fremont, NE. The following summer we packed up and went back to Seattle and stayed a few weeks and moved to Tacoma to a small furnished house in the Proctor district. Then we bought a house and spent our first night there sleeping on the floor because we had no bed for us. I was pregnant again with my second son, David. He was born in St Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma. Then the next year my second daughter, Linda was born at St Jo's. A couple years later we bought a new house and my third son, Jon, was born at St Jo's too. That marriage lasted for 18 years and we divorced. I am currently married to Lou and we will celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary Aug. 16. We live in a very small town of 660 near Chehalis. I am now retired, collecting my SS. My husband is an ouside salesman for a freight truck firm in Chehalis. I keep busy sewing, quilting, crocheting, playing on the computer plus I help a 91 yr old woman with her cleaning a couple times a month. She is going to teach me how to make jewelry from beads. I am going to teach her some computer basics, very basic. So in all, I have five children and nine grandchildren and they all live in Tacoma. Two have graduated from highschool, one from college. One is getting married next month so we will shortly become great grandparents, I'm assuming. We have two small dogs and two cats. We are very quiet people and don't go out except to go to town a couple times a month to grocery shop. We live a very boreing life compared to a lot of people. We go to the county fairs and that's a kick compared to the Puyallup Fair.
