Brenda's Story
When I look at the Chain '63, I can only think how we all look like babies, but when we graduated in '67 I thought we were so grown up! I attended Longwood College for 1 yr and planned to major in Eng Lit and the teach. But I was miserable there. With the Vietnam War raging and the race riots going on across the country, it seemed that the world as I knew it was coming to an end in a hurry. I was engaged to A. Birkel, so we got married in Sept '68 and moved to CA where he was stationed at El Toro Marine Base. Moving to So. CA from C'ville was almost like moving to another planet to me--talk about culture shock! Anyway we had 3 years in CA where our 1st child, Michelle, was born in '70 and we relocated to Winston Salem in Aug '71 where Allen intended to attend WFU. In May '73 our son was born and we were really struggling to make ends meet. Finally after 20 years of an abusive relationship, I separated in '89 and divorced in '91and began the long process of healing, which I find is continually on going.
I was fortunate to be offered a job in '89 at WFU Med School, first in the Controller's Office as part of Acct Rec for 5 yrs, then in Student Financial Aid for 15 yrs. I loved it. Quite a stretch for someone who was planning to teach Eng Lit!
In Oct '08 I was placed on permanent medical leave due to a degenerating lower back condition, plus a few other medical conditions. Bummer! But we keep on going because that's what we do. Right now I'm living with my daughter and her husband and 3 adorable grandchildren. The grandkids give a reason to keep moving. However I've always been a Virginian at heart and am trying to find a way to move back to C'ville area where all my younger sibs still live. Hopefully this will be in the near rather than later future.
In the meantime, I am enjoying hearing from and about former classmates.
How do you hope old friends remember you?
Anyone who read my first 'story' might get the impression that I'm a victim of domestic violence. I'd rather think of myself as a SURVIVOR! And it wasn't a reality show, it was my life! I've been privileged to be a member of The W-S Domestic Violence Community Counsel. I've also had opportunities to share my story with various groups in the area, including WFU Law students and members of the local medical community. As my health allows, I hope to be able to continue to share my story and I trust in some way to encourage others and to allow them to see that life can be better for them as well.
