Brenda's Story

I was one of those Navy kids who moved in and out of different schools, but Flour Bluff always stood out in my mind because I started school there with Mrs. Voight as my teacher. Went to 7th, 8th at the Junior High which was not physically connected to the high school. The only teacher I remember was Mrs. Wright in 7th grade Science. I started high school at Flour Bluff High School in 1961 and I remember that I gave my speech about Sharks but can't recall the teacher's name. remember freshmen orientation where the seniors could "buy" us by bidding. Remember Sandy Lopez, Gracie Navarro, and few others. Just can't recall the names...it was a long time ago, and many waters have run under my bridge. Remember the school bus driver, Mr. Stockton, and how we tortured him. He stopped the bus after we were on base and kicked us all off. Other names that come to me: Vic Mann, Jack Palme, Lori Bangert, Jeannie Rogers who stepped on a string ray at my beach party. We were all Navy brats so who knows where they are now. Someone named Andra with her light blue Ford Comet with whom I had my first car ride without adults. I went through many rit...Expand for more
es of passage in Flour Bluff, the NAS, Padre Island, Corpus Christi, Hurricane Carla in 1960. And how I loved the waters that surrounded us; the sea air; the little critters on the beach. I remember the wind (breezes?) always blowing and having the worst sinus infection in the 8th grade. Still can't get in the wind without a hat on. I remember our address on base: 107 Flamingo NAS. I remember seeing the Blue Angels and meeting one of the pilots---and I dreamed about him for a long time. I remember hearing Elvis Presley sing "It's Now or Never" as I climbed out of my bedroom window so I could meet up with Lori and we could run all over the base without supervision. We moved to Indiana where I graduated from high school with six other classmate...and we went on our senior trip in one car. I have two sons who are now 47 and 45. I was married three times and am now a widow....I graduated from Indiana University with high honors (a lot different from my grades at Flour Bluff) at age 49 and taught for seven years. So awesome to recall these few memories which are so important to me...and now that I'm focusing may come up with more.
