Brenda's Story
Life
I currently live in North Scottsdale, AZ and have 3 dogs. There are some days that I really can't wait to move back to Seattle, then other times when I really love it here. I don't really like it when it is 115 degress, that's when I miss Seattle the most!
Besides my full time "day job", I also have a "hobby" that has turned into a full time second job... I sell clothing and handbags on ebay. It's fun, but a lot of work!!
I run into fellow Oakies from time to time, usually in random places!! There are several that live here in the Phoenix area, even one that worked on my floor at PetSmart (Troy Mellow, class of 86). That was strange to run into someone from high school at work, especially since Oak Harbor is a long way from Phoenix! I also occasionally see people at Mariner's Spring Training games or while traveling. It is always nice to see someone from home!
I'd love to hear from you!! If you are ever in AZ, look me up! =)
School
I remember the spring break outing Junior year to TP Mr. Dickson's house. He always said no one would be able to TP him w/o getting caught! There were 2 car loads of us that tp'd his house and we didn't get caught until someone cracked under pressure once school started again! I remember Christy Guth used to always wear a big white "C" pin and one day in class Mr. Dickson held it up and said "Guth, is this your's?" We just about died! She lost it at his house the night we tp'd. I also remember math... I hated math. Todd Stephenson and Tim Gilbert made it bearable for me! We would sing Violent Femmes songs during class. One day Mr. Des Voines fell off his stool in class and we just about died laughing! If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing! I had a blast in high school! Well, maybe I would have been a little less worried what other people would think... I tend to have a silly side to my personality that makes my current friends laugh. I was always afraid to stand out like that in school, although I was very outgoing then like I am now. Other than that, I wouldn't change a thing! I am still in contact with my friends from high school and enjoy running into people from OH all over the country!
College
I started college in January 1989 at Cypress College in California. I stayed there for several semesters, then transfered to Long Beach City Colleg...Expand for more
e which was closer to my home at the time. I went to school part time and was working full time. I ran into a fellow Oakie (Amy Griffin) while attending classes at LBCC. I wasn't friends with her in high school, but we hit it off and today she is one of my closest friends. It was hard working full time and going to school part time. I moved back to Seattle in 1991 and finished my Associate's at Bellevue Community College. I really wanted to go to UW, but could never make the schedule work. In Jan of 2000, my husband and I moved to Arizona where I was able to finally go back to school and finish my Bachelors. I became obsessed with my grades and graduated Summa Cum Laude from ASU with a degree in Organizational Communications with an emphasis in Human Resources. Not all of my prior credits transfered, so when I enrolled, I had three years of school to complete. I was able to finish in two years, including summer school. I went full time and really worked hard to achieve my goal. I was so proud that I graduated with top honors, Summa Cum Laude!!!!
I would like to go back to school and get my MBA, but the thought of another two years of stress and lack of a life/free time have so far, kept me from enrolling. I am an over achiever and don't know if I can put myself through that again.
Workplace
I started my working career in the airline industry. I moved to LA right after high school, went to airline school with Katie Graham and Jenny Yadon, then worked for QANTAS at LAX for just over a year. I LOVED that job! I had a great time, my co-workers were a lot of fun and I got to see famous people almost every night. I then went to the corporate travel side of the industry where I was a VIP agent for almost 10 yrs. I got a big break while working for Rosenbluth and got a promotion as a recruiter for one of our regions. I LOVED that job and was a natural at it. When Rosenbluth was bought out by American Express, I went to work for PetSmart at the corporate office where I was the Services Recruiting Manager. I have been a recruiter now for 7 years. My job at PetSmart changed due to realignment to the field, so I started looking for a new job. I started working for FedEx Kinko's this year as a Senior Recruiter for the Heartland Region. I was promoted in June 2007 to a Regional Field Recruiting Manager. I really like it!
