Brent's Story
I grew up in Kent, Washington and attended several elementary schools as we moved from house to house. The Elementary schools I remember attending were Meridian, Scenic Hill, Pine Tree and at least one other(may have been two others).
I attended Sequioa Junior High School for my 7th & 8th grade years. Spring of my 8th grade year I left school a couple weeks before the end of the school year to travel Europe with my family for several weeks. During that summer we moved again, landing in Enumclaw Washington, where I attended Enumclaw High School until graduating in 1977.
After High School, I attended Central Washington University and obtained a BS in Accounting, graduating in 1981. After graduating I passed the CPA exam in 1983.
After College I worked for Pietro's Corporation (owned by Campbell Soup), Ellis Martin & Assoc (syndicated orchard partnerships), Select Business Ventures (tavel company), Magna Design (office furniture manufacturing) and US Marine/Bayliner (boat manufacturing).
In the summer of 1989 I found myself between jobs again and decided to quit working for the "other guy" since I was always on the out for someone else's problem. So I took the novel approach of going into business for myself. In October 1989 I bought the Stanwood Dairy Queen restaurant. In 1994 we built the Sedro-Woolley Dairy Queen and opened it in June. I survived the ups and downs of that business and finally reached burn-out. In 2002 I found a buyer for the Dairy Queens and sold them in October and November of that year. I did retain ownership of the building in Sedro-Woolley and remain the lan...Expand for more
dlord of that property today.
Along my journey, I finally found someone to settle down with. In July 1990 I married Kathryn (Kathy) Palmquist. We spent several years enjoing marriage, scuba diving, boating, taveling and wine before we started our family. In September 1996 our first son Vincent was born, in September 1998 our daughter Teresa was born and in January 2000 we were blessed (and a bit surprised) to have our youngest son Matthew born.
In 2007 I lost both of my parents which had a profound impact on my life. My Mom lost her 3 year battle to oral cancer in Febraury 2007. In August 2007 my Father succumbed to a sudden illness.
So what have I done since I sold the Dairy Queens? Well I've continued to be a landlord for the Sedro-Woolley building. I also did some stock trading for a while and still follow the markets closely today. A lot of time was spent decompressing, being Mr. Mom, helping my parents and wrapping up the loose ends after both my parent's death. I've been involved in my son's hockey teams as a manager, trainer and a hockey dad. I've volunteered quite a bit at the catholic school my children attend and where Kathy is the principal. Spending time over the years since I sold the stores has been the priority. This past summer (2009) we took the plunge and bought a travel trailer and spent 31 days exploring 9 National parks in Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.
Now as things are settling down again, I'm now trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow-up. So if anyone needs an accountant/bookkeeper on a contract, temp or part-time basis, look me up.
