Bret's Story
Guess I still have the travel bug, as I have been in every state in the US except Alaska, 11 of the 13 provinces on Canada, TJ Mexico, West and Unified Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, England, S Wales, Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, S Korea, N Korea (- at Panmunjom - the border where the 1951 armistace was signed...when the N Koreans came into the room, I fled to the S Korean side of the room, but I did get my picture taken over there!), Japan, Kuwait, Iraq, Kurdistan. Hmmm I thought there was 1 more, but I can't remember it - Guess I am getting old ;)
I have worked both blue and white collar work and have lived on the streets for 9-months (until I stopped hating myself and thinking God owed me a favor). Zig Ziglar's book, 'See You at the Top,' has had an extremely powerful influence on my life since discovering it while living on the streets (yeah bushes, cardboard and all).
I become enthralled with the virtual world of the Internet and have thus become fairly proficient in both the hardware and software aspects of both PC's and Mac's (and am now exploring the vast world of Unix). I biked a half-dozen solo-century (100+) mile rides from 1993-1996 in Northern CA, ran a 30-K run in Buda, TX (2000 - I didn't run very fast, and had a finish time of 4:05:10...something about "hitting the wall," at mile marker 14), and attempted the 4-days (100 miles) marches (actually 120 miles, as it was 2.5 miles each way from Camp Heumensoord ...Expand for more
to the start/end point) in Nijmegan, Holland (2000 - walked myself right into a wheelchair, I did), as well as ran the 10-K Aloha Run in Oahu (2001). I even skied in CO, CA, MT, NM, S. Korea, Germany, Austria & Switzerland. Unfortunately, my knees have given out on me, so I have been reduced to walking and biking (but I am an active participant in the Hash House Harriers).
I served nearly 14-years in the US Army, lived in Germany from 2000-2009 (during which time I did a stint in OIF2 in Iraq in 2004-2005 and sustained a shoulder injury), and am currently 80% disabled (according to VA, and can tell when the weather is going to change without consulting the barometer). I am attending college in my home-state of Colorado, using the Post 9/11 GI Bill to get my B.S. in Information Systems Management.
The most powerful lessons I can impart are:
1) If you are going to do something, do it for yourself, because no one is going to do it for you.
2) You can get anything in Life that you want, if you help enough other people get what they want (Zig Ziglar, 'See You at the Top')
3) Don't find yourself on a spinal board, gurney, stretcher or hospital bed telling yourself 'I wish I did more with my Life'
and finally
4) Smiles are free and contageous...and while it takes more muscles to smile than to frown, excercise is good for you...besides, making a person smile or laugh and relieving the burden of life from their shoulders for even a mere moment, is a worthwhile goal and will help you live longer!
