Brett's Story

Life brettpfeifer(at)sbcglobal(dot)net I worked at FedEx from just after graduating from high school until January of 2004. After earning my Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education at Rockhurst University in May 2004, I became certified to teach grades 1 through 6 in Missouri. Then I taught for three years at East Elementary School in the KCMO School District, including one year (my first) of 5th grade, followed by 2 years in Special Education, where I taught kids with emotional disturbances and/or behavior disorders in grades K-3. Unfortunately, the teaching gig proved not to be a suitable match for me. Next I went to work for the Social Security Administration in October of 2007, as a Benefits Authorizer trainee. However, I gave that job up after 4 months to pursue "kinship" fostering of 2 young cousins who had ended up in State custody. I needed a job with different hours that would allow me more time to take care of their many needs. But then the court decided I wasn't a good enough candidate to act as their caregiver. So I guess I gave up a coveted federal government job for nothing. Figures. No worries, though -- I didn't really enjoy that job anyway. But I have to admit I miss the money. Currently, I am employed in the job I took in place of the SSA job: a Special Education Paraprofessional at Blue Springs High School. The money isn't the greatest, but the hours are quite nice, and I even get to...Expand for more
sleep in when the winter weather is particularly crappy (i.e., snow days). Plus, I really enjoy being back working in special education, being able to work with the kids, without all the frustrations and long hours I endured as a teacher. I even discovered that I like interacting with teenagers as much as I enjoyed working with elementary kids. (Well, almost.) And this summer I'll be working with early childhood special ed students, so about the only thing left will be middle schoolers. Then I will have all sorts of experience working with other people's children of varying ages. Now if I could just have some of my own... But who knows, maybe this way is better -- I get to interact with the kids on a daily basis, but just about the time I am getting tired, they go home. Kind of like being a grandparent, eh? I am a member of St. Regis Church in South Kansas City, where I am quite active in parish life, attending Mass weekly and volunteering as much as I can. Still single, I have no kids of my own (as alluded to above). I really love spending time with brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, Mom, Dad, old high school buddies, and my extended parish family. However, I have not given up on having a family of my own some day soon. I am even considering fostering to adopt. Old friends and acquaintances please feel free to contact me at brettpfeifer(at)sbcglobal(dot)net. Maybe we can do dinner or something. Brett
