Brian's Story
After YMCI I attended University of Toronto undergraduate and then UofT Law School. Continued running during this time and in 1972 I won marathons in Detroit and Los Angeles. Graduated from Law School in May, 1973 and during the next seven months I ran three of the thirteen fastest marathons run in the world during 1973 (Google "Marathon 1973 World Rankings" for the world list) and was ranked third in the world by Track and Field News (Google "Track and Field News Rankings"). Represented Canada at the 1974 Commonwealth Games at Christchurch, New Zealand, not as well as I had hoped. Started to practice law in 1976, mostly as a sole practitioner in Islington. Retired from competitive running in 1989 and started cycling. In 1996 and again in 2000 I cycled over 430 miles in a 24-hour event in Michigan. It remains my main mode of transportation and exercise. n 2002 I started volunteering in the rescue of migratory birds that collide with windows in the office towers in the financial district. This has become my job during the spring and fall. I enjoy doing this more than anything and patrol almost every morning. I estimate that to date I have about 7,000 live rescues and about the same number of dead. I started photographing some of the birds I was able to release and this grew into a hobby photographing wildlife, mostly birds. I now have at least decent pictures of over 3,400 different species of birds. Since 2002 I have taken 8 trips to Africa, 9 to South America, 8 to Central America and Mexico, 6 to Asia, 2 to Australia and 4 to the Caribbean. In 2009 I hiked the Inca Trail in Peru and in 2012 hiked to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Have been living near High Park in Toronto since 1978, except for about one and one-half years in Mississauga in the early 80's.
