Brian's Story

My plan after high school was always to go to college, get married and then start my own company. That's not what happened. I thought I was well on the way to meeting those goals, I was out of high school, engaged to get married and working two jobs saving up for marriage and college (my two highest priorities). Then two things happened that changed my whole life. My sweetheart changed her mind about marriage, and my best friend told me he was going to be drafted into the Army if he didn't enlist (it was the last year of the draft and his number was 90). I agreed to join the Air Force with him even though my draft number was 361 just to clear my head and get over my loss. Six months later my buddy got out of the military with a medical discharge, went home and married my sister. I stayed in for the full four year term. I spent my military career working on nuclear weapons (ICBM's) in Montana. I loved the work, the travel and got to spend a lot of time in some of the most beautiful country in the US. Because I was an outdoorsman, I truly was in heaven. The high point though, was getting to transport an ICBM to Vandenberg AFB in California and test launching it into the South Pacific (the test was one of the most accurate on record!). I got married on the rebound while stationed in Montana in the service, it lasted four years. The best thing that happened from that experience was my daughter Crystal. She still lives in Great Falls, she married a great guy and is in college majoring in accounting. They say you never get over your first love, and I know its true. I tried to find her a couple of times after military tech school, but gave up when I was told by her sister that she'd gotten married after I joined the service. I know I had to lose her because I was young and had so much yet to learn about relationships, but the love was so strong and it was a very painful parting for me; something I wish had never happened. She still crosses my mind often, and I wonder how our lives would have turned out if we hadn't split. I hope she's done well and has a happy life. After the service I initially returned to construction for awhile, went to school for a fine arts in photography, then later received a BA in business and became a CPA. I have worked for two CPA firms, but spent most of my career in private industry. I've had a couple of brushes with my own mortality, I'm a two-time cancer survivor. It has caused me some loss of functionality, but it...Expand for more
doesn't slow me down. My favorite two sports (both winter sports) are skiing and scuba diving, and living in the Pacific Northwest gives me plenty of opportunity for both (though I won't turn down an opportunity to go south to dive). In the summer time, I like to fish and backpack, now that my oldest granddaughter is four she's going to be my shadow on the mountain trails and the lakes. I used to canoe her mother across lakes when she was a baby and I'm getting to live it all over again! I've been getting back into hunting in the fall, been away from it since I left Montana, but there are lots of opportunities for a good hunt in Washington too. I tried marriage a second time, this one stuck and I have two daughters, the older one (Jessica) is an attorney living in the Portland area and has an almost two year old daughter of her own (Katelyn). My youngest daughter (Kimberly) is also a mommy with a 4 year old daughter (Alexis). Kim became very sick after her baby was delivered and the father decided not to stay in the picture. They live with me now and Alexis is my constant shadow (and I'm loving it). Kim's condition had been very difficult for doctors to get a grip on, ,but we remain hopeful that she will get better soon. My business life is multi-threaded. I've been connected with the software industry more than once, I've done consulting work for financially troubled businesses and have helped a few businesses survive hard times and prosper. I've owned numerous businesses and for the past three years I have been building homes through my own general contracting firm for people with disabilities. Life has been hectic, but I've always enjoyed the environment that is created when productive ideas pick up momentum. I haven't looked back much since leaving high school, I've always tried to keep looking forward. I haven't been back to Phoenix for almost thirty years, but maybe it's time I considered it. I don't know who is still there who would even remember me, maybe that's why I made the effort to write this and see who is still out there. As I grow older, I find myself spending more time thinking about the people I knew in High School, one in particular I'd like to see very much to try to set right a wrong that was committed out of my own stupidity. There are others I've always wondered about but haven't any idea how to get in touch because they aren't registered on this site and other searches on the internet haven't produced anything useful.
