Brian Bird:

CLASS OF 1964
Toronto, ON

Brian's Story

After leaving York Memo in November, 1963, I started working in a bank, the TD, then moved to Texaco where I worked in various offices from 1965 to 1972, joined the Federal Tax Dept. in 1972, graduated with my CGA in 1974. Too many places of employment followed, but in 2001 my second wife and I moved to Peterborough where I continue to run a small accounting practice. Unfortunately, my wife died in 2011 and I miss spending the golden years with her. Sharron was my soul mate. A lot of water has flowed under the bridge over the past 50+ years, but no real regrets about life. I have three children, 5 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild. Although I don't travel as much now, I have been lucky enough to cross the big pond once, on a trip to Spain, vacationed in Jamaica, Mexico twice, and Cuba twice. I've been through 34 of the U.S. states, but only 5 provinces. I hope to correct that in the next year or two. I would love to visit Nfld, and the three western provinces I haven't seen. I was lucky enough to spend about a week in Jasper Park in 1977. That is one gorgeous place. For now, I do work on a very limited basis, and play lots of golf during the season. I made one very bad mistake in highschool in taking 3 languages starting in Grade X. I ended up in the A forums and most of my classmates were far more studious than I. After leaving York in November, 1963, and working for a number of years, I realized my need for more training in order to succeed long term. I enrolled in the CGA program in 1969, being heavily weighed down by a wife, two children, and a mortgage to pay. Fortunately, accounting proved to be my calling. I'm sure now this was the proper route ...Expand for more
for me to follow. I was at a complete loss back in 1963 as to what I should strive for. I remember my years at York fondly, have run into a couple former students who worked at the same place I worked. I guess things are much more complicated for students now. There is so much more to learn, and pressure on students to succeed is obviously extreme given the ever changing job market they must compete in. I think most of us who entered the workforce in the mid 1960s should be glad there were so many jobs available, and the chance to learn and grow over the years. Seldom any longer do we see people who are working for the same company on retirement that they started at. My final comment is regarding Peterborough. I know it's hard to fathom, but I find this small city very similar to the York Township area I grew up in. Then, a short walk got you into a forested area. There were lots of parks close by where we skated during the winter, and played ball in the remainder of the year. Here, a five minute walk gets you into parks with trails through them, bicycling is still fairly safe, with lots of bicycle lanes, and there are lots of parks to enjoy. In addition, a section of the canal through the east side of Peterborough is used for skating, something like the Rideau Canal in Ottawa, but not as long. The only negative is that Peterborough has the highest per centage of seniors of any city in Canada. Since I learned to drive in Toronto, and spent years fighting the traffic congestion there, I tend to be a little impatient. These damned old fogies here are pathetically slow drivers. Luckily, from the middle of town, it takes only 5 to 10 minutes to get out of town.
