Brian's Story

Life Hello, Everybody... Sometimes it seems like forever since we were in school, and other times it seems like it was just yesterday. I'm still in Atlanta - no plans to leave. Dianna and I were married in January of 1989. We have three great children - two girls, 16 & 14, and one boy, who is 11. They're all three involved in sports, and they're really good kids. We spend most evenings between the ballpark, basketball games, football games, or track meets, and while it's hectic, that's the way we want it. I'm still at Kroger (since December of 1977). I've done lots of things in my career - when we were in school, I was stocking groceries or running a cash register at the old Belvedere store. I went into management in the late 80's. I ran a store for a few years, had responsibility for a zone for a few years, and since 1996, I've been responsible for merchandising & marketing at the corporate office at Northlake. Hopefully somehow by 2017 (after 40 years) I can afford to retire! (Please pray that the HOPE scholarship stays healthy, otherwise, with all the college educations coming at us, it may be 2037, when I'm 76.) After high school, because I was working so much, I wasted a lot of time during the college years, and only got about halfway through. I surely wish I had stayed focused then. But you know, "a bird in the hand" and all that stuff. My parents warned me, but of course, I knew better than they did. Before I knew it, I had taken several promotions, which made it tough to work school into my schedule. Then I got married, then we had kids, etc.. etc... I always promised myself I'd do it "soo...Expand for more
n". I woke up one day in the summer of 2003 and realized I was almost 42 years old, and that a lot of "soon" was water under the bridge. So, after all these years, I went back to school that October, at DeVry. I still work about 60 hours a week, so I'm only attending part time, but it's going great so far. At some point in the next few years, I'll finally finish with a Business Administration degree. Not long after that, my oldest daughter will be in college. I'm hoping that she will take my example as how NOT to go to college, and she'll go straight through. We live in South Forsyth County - our mailing address is Cumming, but we're in the phone book as Alpharetta. My parents finally moved from Decatur, to about 10 minutes from our house. My sister Jane and her family live between us. I don't think many Avondale folks made it this direction. I don't get to see anyone much, but I'd love to hear from you - look me up or drop me a note. There is a really neat website - AHS65 dot com, which was started by someone in the Class of 65, of course. They have a daily email broadcast which any AHS alumnus can subscribe to. While the members of their email group range from 1958 graduates to 1983 grads, I don't know many of the people, but it's fun to hear them talk about all the places we used to go. The neat thing is seeing how a bunch of people who really didn't even know each other that well when they were in high school have become pretty good friends. If you get a chance, check it out and ask to subscribe to their newsletter - it's free. Hope life brings you all the best, Brian Brooks September, 2008
