Brian's Story

Life I have now been married for almost a year and half to a wonderful woman, Jennifer, who I met through eharmony while I was in residency in upstate New York. We met in Feb, were engaged in Aug and married in Dec. Being a little older than most getting married (I was 28 and she was 25) meant we had enough dating experience that we were experts at finding what we were not looking for so when we found each other it was very easy to know. We are about to move from Johnson City, NY to Glasgow, MT this Summer to start a little bit of adventure now that I am completing my medical residency. I am anxious to become more involved in a local church than just attending on Sunday mornings and I hope to be able to have some level of a life outside of work again. Other than getting married I don't have too much to say about life during the last 8 years where I was in medical school and residency. Yes, the hours are as bad as they say they are. But it sure makes you appreciate being done. I hope to get back involved in church and possibly a praise band again. I would love to go back to volunteering with the local fire department and I would love to become a boy scout leader again. I guess you can check back in a year and see if I have done those things. I would love to post my personal website but the Classmates rules say that I cannot. But if you were to google me the top several hits are about me. The webpage that starts with my first name is my personal page. I love being able to post photos at ya hoo. My name there is brianbuschman. College I attended University of Maryland. If there is actually anybody from a college of 35,000 that finds me through this website that is just amazing. I graduated in 4 years with a degree in biochemistry/pre-med. I was accepted into the Ross University, School of Medicine where five years latter I recieved my MD. During that time I spent two years living literally <100 yards from the Caribbean sea (during the classroom years of med school). I then returned to the states where I completed the two years of hospital training. I rotated at hospitals in Miani, Baltimore, Washington, Cape Cod, Upstate New York...Expand for more
and spent time studying and working in Champaign, IL, San Marcos, TX and Riverside, CA. Needless to say these were two very busy years. I enjoyed getting to live in so many different places and when it was done I was very happy to land in one place for the next three years. That place was Johnson City, NY where I was accepted in a Family Medicine residency. I am just finishing up after getting trained in general pediatrics, adult medicine, OB/GYN and a little bit of primairy care psyc. In additional to the general family doc things I will still be delivering babies (I have delivered about more than 150 at this point) and will be surgically trained in c-sections and will assist on other major surgery. My first job after residency will be completing my training to preform colonoscopy and the scope to look from the mouth down into the stomach. You can read about that job on the next section. Workplace In Aug 07 I will be starting my first regular job after 12 years of post-high school training. I am heading out to Glasgow, MT where I will be one of 9 docs in the county. This town is so small that the nearest Walmart is 142 miles away in ND and the nearest shopping mall is a 280 mile drive down to Billings, MT. I will be doing a little outpatinet work taking care of all ages for general medicine and obstetrics. I will be doing a little bit of ER work, I will be rotating turns being the hospital physician and delivering babies. One thing that excites me about this job is that I will be getting trained to be the primairy surgeon for c-sections and will be fully trained in GI scope procedures (colonoscopy and EGD). I am becoming the small town family practice doc that still does a little bit of everything. I will have a little bit of support since the town does have a few other docs. We have the ony specialists for over 100 miles. I will be one of 4 family medicine docs, 1 pediatrician, 1 OB/GYN, 1 radiologist, 1 general surgeon and 1 orthopedic surgeon. We also have the help of 2 nurse anesthestists, 2 nurse practicioners and a PA that comes up to cover our ER on weekends. It will be quite an adventure but I am very excited about it.
