Brian's Story
The best thing that has happened to me in my life is to be married to Ingrid Nelsen, also from the class of 75. We have three daughters, two grandsons and one granddaughter. I took a job as a college intern in an Engineering Lab and now have spent my entire career in many widely disparate laboratories developing everything from Coke machines to sub-atomic particle detectors. For anyone who knew me, in hindsight, it seems natural that I have spent my life designing and building machines of all sorts. I work at one of the National Labs where most of my recent work has been developing new techniques for diagnosing disease, mostly cancer. ff my extensive bucket list, when after hiking in Acadia National Park last Fall (2022), I have walked in all 50 states.
I've had a lot of events in my life that seem so improbable I wonder if I just dreamed them. I've worked with three Nobel prize winners and met three more. I met and chatted with Stephan Hawking.a couple of times. While working at CERN in Geneva, my office mate, who later won the 1992 Nobel Prize for Physics, told me that the guy who's office was across the hall from mine, Timothy Berners-Lee, has this new thing, which he calls the World Wide Web, for moving large amounts of data around. He had a demonstration terminal in the hallway. I checked it out, but was not impressed, since there was almost nothing on the World Wide Web at that time.
