Brian's Story

Life After high school I attended Monroe Community College in pursuit of a Civil Engineering degree. That was a very busy time. I was working two part time jobs and going full time to college. I worked two days a week for 4 hrs as a draftsman for a company named Edmac and Associates. Evenings I worked for pumping gas for a Sunoco station. (That was before the days of self-service gas stations.) And I still was carrying a full course load at college during the day. I met an engineer at Edmac that was a Private Pilot and he introduced me to the world of aviation. He hooked me up with Key Aviation at the Monroe County Airport and I began taking flying lessons. My first solo flight was in the summer of 1974. I passed the practical exam in early 1975 and officially became a Private Pilot. My career path was starting change. I now knew I want to fly for a living if at all possible. I took a year off from college to evaluate and work. Edmac took me on full time and I continued to work at the gas station in the evening. I build up some savings and spent the rest on flying lessons. The following year I returned to the Monroe Community College and finished up in 1976 with an Associates Degree in Civil Engineering. That summer I moved to Daytona Beach Florida to attend the Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. In the interest of getting out of school as fast as possible, I did not take off over the summer and completed 3 years of college in 2 years. I received my BS in Aviation Science in 1978. Leaving school I also I had a Commercial Pilot Certificate, a Flight Instructor Certificate and was also Instrument Rated and Multi-Engine rated. I had lined up a job before graduation at a small airport near Orlando, FL. They were looking for a flight instructor and I was more than willing to help out. I ...Expand for more
spent the next 2 years teaching people to fly airplanes and couldn't believe they were paying me to fly airplanes! An opportunity came along to fly for an air courier company and I took it. The outfit was called Airlift Associates. They were based in Raleigh, NC but were flying a courier flights under contract with Pony Express in Florida. I was not flying under FAR 135, building time and experience in all sorts of weather, good and bad! I eventually ended up with a competitor called Chapman Air based in Orlando, FL. I guess the owner saw something in me and promoted me to Chief Pilot. Another step up! Chapman Air was sold lock, stock and barrel in 1985. I was part of the deal and went along with it. That was when I was promoted to Director of Flight Operations. Now, directing a flight operation doesn't involve a lot of flying. It does involve a lot of hard work on the ground. I was flying less and less and spending more and more time dealing with the day-to-day problems of staffing, scheduling and training. In early 1998 it came to a head. After flying for 21 years and accumulating 13,000 flight hours, I left the aviation business. I started over with a financial services career. The first stop on this new path was at The Equitable (now know as AXA Equitable). In 2005 I landed at Bank of America where I worked until retiring at the end of 2016. I had not flown an airplane for nearly 17 years when the bug came back. I found a flight instructor and got current once again. My flying career was far behind me now, but I still love flying. I make it a point to rent an airplane and fly somewhere once a month. I've been married since 1986 to wife Karen who I met during my 21 years in Florida, She , interestingly enough, grew up in Syracuse. We now live in Charlotte, NC.
