Albert's Story

Hi all, I have been fortunate to have essentially been able to create a very good life and continue to do so. From Lafayette, I went on to Brooklyn Coll. where I majored in psychology, played soccer for what was to be great championship teams in 1960 & 61. (fourth best in the country in 1961 (NCAA Finals). From there went on to Graduate school on and received my PhD in 1972 in Psych. and then continued for three post doc Certificates in Psychoanlaysis, Group Therapy and Supervision. I am currently in private practice and Direct training programs at The Training Insittute for Mental Health in NY whre I Direct Training in Couple therapy and am on the faculty of various University Post Doc programs. I currently write, practice and spend a lot of time in Argentina where I grew up (hence the soccer - which I still play with the old guys in a senior league). I also do a lot of professional presenting, both in Argentina, (fluent in Spanish) and across the U.S. I Serve on the Board of Psychoanalysis of the American Psychological Association and have writted two books and many articles. covering varied topics form romantic relations, couples therapy, Art and Salvador Dali, Group Therapy, The unconscious and Culture etc. Currently writing a book on Charlie Chaplin! Another thing is that I am collegially friendly with another graduate of our class Irwin Hirsch, who is also a Psychologist-Psychoanalyst. And is quite renown.! We have done a number of presentations together and he has on one occasion been a discussant of one of my papers. Who knew when we were bouncing around Bensonhurst! Irwin told me about the reunion! I have a wonderful son and daughter in law who gave me a lovely grandaughter (Courtney Lee Brok) And the latest news as of May 1, 2008, there is another one on the way....!!! They live in Highland Park, Ill. There have also been two big tragedies in my life. The first was the loss of my wife Carol to Cancer in 1982. I had met her in 1965 when we both lived in the Village, ( I in the East Village, she in the West Village) So I went upscale and we married in 1966 and had our son in 1972. It is very sad for me that she has not been able to see our son Jorden grow up fully and be the mature man he is and the good fatherand husband he has become and of course share in the joy of our grandaughter. (and new grandcdhild on the way). The other, is that my second wife Aracelia came down with severe and rapid onset of Alzheimers though she was only 57 years old. She was a superb Professor at Columbia and a clinical p...Expand for more
sychologist with great acumen. In additions she was an accomplished quilter, artist and dancer. Unfortunately, she now needs 24 hour care, so it is again a difficult time for me. My only solace is that I am doing a pretty good job in keeping her stimulated, entertained and cared for. However, the tragedy of losing a companion in life is extremely difficult, especially someone who was vibrant and loved every aspect of life. and to have this sort of experience twice in one life! Though it doesn't totally make up for things, I am fortunate to have support from my son and daughter in law (her name is Jana) who I see about once a month, for a long week-end ,My son Jorden and I go to at least one Football game year in Madison Wisconsin, where he went to school. I am incredibly good luck, we have not seen The Badgers lose at Camp Randall Stadium for many years. I also am blessed with family and friends. and professional colleagues both here and in Buenos Aires who keep me going. I also have "created my own support" through having many interests which are meaningful to me. , I have initiated some film programs with speakers on various topics and have pursued a hobby which has evolved into a small business in collecting and selling old movie posters and various old games, tin toys and other collectibles. I also pursue photography, made a film some time back and have an interst in Art, (though I am a terrible painter). I am thinking of mountning a small show in the near future of some of my documentary photographs of the 1960's. The base for all this is my home in Bedford, N.Y whre I have lived since 1984. I also keep an office in Manhattan, and have a apartment in the same building as my office at 11 Riverside Drive.where I stay during the week. All in all. I have the paradox of tragedy and loss, and at the same time, happines and success in most other aspects of my life. So it is. I am grateful for what I have and maintain a strong joy for life. There is of course, much more to a life of 67 years. But enough for now. Be fun to see some people who I havent seen in 1/2 century and catch up with all of our complex and hopefully interesting life trajectories. Plus I have stories to tell about my adventures in class especially with Tessa Costa, (Spanish teacher), Alfano, (Physics), Mr. Pincus, (Gym ) coach, Leo LaMonica, (soccer coach), Mary Buda (you know who that was) Joe Shapiro (TTF English) remember he wrote some # 1 rock hits.! ) and many many others that shall remained unamed at the moment. Best to all, Al Brok
