Gail's Story
Yes, it's me. I didn't disappear, entirely. I dropped out. Forgive me for my sudden departure, if it applies. Dropped friends my age - even my BEST FRIEND (sorry Kelli) for friends not in school bc (?) Teenage brains are stupid. I was determined to be an adult well before it was time. Now I despise adulting. Life is f'd up, isn't it?
While you guys were going to prom and applying to college, I was working. My parents had this thing about me dropping out so they threw me out, too. Anyway, adults have to pay bills. I found a glamorous job as a flag girl and learned what it really means to be bored. Had to make a choice between boredom (which eventually could mean jail or death bc I am a hot mess when I'm bored) OR college. I'll save you the suspense - I made the right choice. And thank god for Delaware Tech where everyone is welcome and the instructors are committed to helping their students with LIFE and school. I am so very proud to be one of them today and have the opportunity to give back what was given to me.
Sorry. I digress.
I learned quick that I LIKE SCHOOL and I'm good at it. AA in my pocket and 100% prepared for a "real" university, Went to West Chester, another great school! And it was easy because, well, DelTech. Had a BA in less than 2 years and my MA shortly after. Got my first "real" job at Playtex in Dover, moved below the canal - social SUICIDE (!) but the job made it worth the sacrifice. 10 fabulous years working with great people. I learned everything - and I mean EVERYTHING - about manufacturing FD...Expand for more
A regulated products from start to finish.
LOVED PLAYTEX but easily lured away by a fat raise and huge sign-on bonus. Lived in Media, PA, had a hot race car, no kids, great job, and a Harley. Life was great but the excess that defined the 90's was coming to an end and everything I didn't plan on doing, happened.
Laid off. Big $ job, gone. And to my surprise, pregnant at 37. And 100% NOT PREPARED.
But what a miracle she is. I never knew I could love another person this much.
I've been at DelTEch 15 years. Social Science instructor - I teach the fun stuff. And I get to help young people get on the right path and see them succeed - the greatest reward, ever.
My next career will not have homework. I love teaching but I've had enough homework in this lifetime.
My interests include politics (but that's quickly fading bc it's too stressful!) and learning anything and everything I find interesting and useful. I love HARLEY'S and traveling the U.S. on my bike as often as possible. Love the mountains and twisty roads. I read anything I can get my hands on, almost and love documentaries. PBS is my favorite station. Yes, I'm a nerd. But a cool nerd ;) I'm going to start teaching study abroad courses at the college next year so I can see the world on taxpayer money, lol. Nahhh....the students taking the course ultimately pay for my trip - I think. But it's money well spent. Many will never get the chance to travel when they leave here.
