Kay's Story

Life My life has been from a farmers wife to a college professor. In between I have raised to children- a boy who is now 41and a daughter who is 45. MY HOW TIME FLIES. My first husband Larry Miller, died of cancer when my kids were in high school. I spent several years in Sacramento working as a special education teacher. Was offered a job in South Alabama to teach "Iam O.K. You're O.K." My kids and I returned to California a year later (Federal Politics you know) after working on a Title 4 Desergreation project. We arrived in California, I drove a rice harvester for 8 weeks until I got a job with the California Department of Education. 18 years later I left the department and formed a educational consulting business. Then I got a job as a principal of a non-public school for the emotionally disturbed children. It was there that I met my husband. I hired him as a teacher. He became the administrator of a school for the emotionally disturned children. I worked for the National University as a professor and coordinator of student teachers. Tom was diagnosed with colon cancer. He had surgery and many months of chemotherapy. During that time we purchased a motor home and joined a group called the "old wheels" we were the youngest old wheel. We enjoyed the travel and continued to work at our respective jobs. We started to restore a 1929 Model A sport coupe it was a great deal of fun, but soon Tom did not have the strength to complete the things that needed to be done. We passed it on to my son, Scott. He is in the process of completing the restoration. We missed the 50th reunion, due to some complications of Tom's cancer. I do not plan to miss any of future gatherings. We moved to North Carolina so Tom could be part of a Cancer Trial at Duke University. We have spent a year and two months. Tom died on December 4th of 2007. He had a 4 1/2 years of a battle to beat the cancer and finally God took him to His Heavenly Home. He is so very much missed. I moved back to Sacramento area. Most of my family lives here. I have enjoyed spending time with friends and attended the 55th Class reunion. Fondly your classmate, Kay Jett Brown UPDATE ON KAY: Well, I have returned to California now for almost 3 years. I am looking forward to our 55th reunion in August. I am living with my son in Loomis California. We have this lovely home on 2 acres on the outskirts of the town. I feel that I am living back in the country again. I love gar...Expand for more
dening, church activities, visiting with friends, working on family histories, and just looking for interesting things to do. I am waiting for someone to go traveling with. Looking forward to seeing everyone in four months. Kay ANOTHER UPDATE ON KAY: I had a great time at the 55th reunion. Can't believe how hardy our class members have been. I was saddened my the ones who have gone on. I had a wonderful visit with my cousin who lives in Bella Vista. We haven't spent much time lately, but when I was a child we spent many hours playing together. I began restoring antique trunks and I think that I have finished the first one. I love to know the history of where the trunks have been. Years ago Tom and I restored a trunk for the first lady dentist who lived in Nevada City, CA. Also had one from the Oklahoma land rush. Guess that is about all for now. December 30, 2010 Kay 11/11/11 Pretty special date. Especially when we are honoring those who have given their lives that we might be free. This past 3 months have been very busy for me. A reunion of the 23 girls that I was a house manager for when I was a student at Chico State University in the 60's. I also co-chaired the Relay for Life in Loomis before we moved back to Carmichael. It was our first year and we raised over $20,000.00 for Cancer. Hoorah ! ! Then in October, 23 members of our church came together and went to Joplin MO to assist in the clean up following the Tornado. The devistation was awful and so many people lost their homes and some their lives. It was a great experience to be their and be of help to many people. Once again, thats about all for now. I must start getting ready for Thanksgiving and start planning for Christmas. Happy Holidays to you all and hope to hear from you all. Kay 9/27/12 Well, another school year has already begun and I am not teaching. I always think about putting up bulletin boards and getting ready to greet children. Currently, I am keeping busy working and volunteering in my church. This month I am leading a Grief Workshop for people who have lost their loved ones. I find that very rewarding. Last year we had the 50th reunion of the Asbury Hall (a living center sponsored by the Methodist Church) girls . We had such a great time. We shared so many memories from our time at Chico State university. I hope you are all having a great year. I am starting to make cards for Christmas. So,I had better get started. God. Bless you all Kay
