Bruce's Story
Life
Graduated from Duanesburg Central School in upstate New York in 1978. Went to a small college in New Hampshire to study aviation. The college, Nathaniel Hawthorne College, has long since closed down.
Enlisted in the Air Force in 1981 and served continuously on active duty for 24-1/2 years. Married in 1995, just prior to being transfered to North Dakota. Served overseas in Egypt, Germany (twice), Spain, Belgium, and England. Came back to North Dakota in 2001 at the end of my second overseas assignment to Germany. Last duty station was Cavalier AFS, a small radar facility in the far northeastern corner of North Dakota, near the Canadian Border. Retired out of the Air Force as a Master Sergeant (MSgt) in October 2005 and moved back to Great Falls, Montana. Hired on with a company that has a contract at Malmstrom AFB to handle much of the workload previously done by military personnel in the Communications Squadron. Due to downsizing the Air Force has been out-sourcing many jobs to reduce the number of active-duty personnel.

1987-1995. I am the Land Mobile Radio manager for the base, responsible for keeping track of over 3,000 2-way radios used on base and out in the 23,500 square mile missile field. I handle all repair requests, ensuring repair technicians respond to radio system outages, as well as the routine mobile radio installs & removals. I also handle minor equipment repairs and reprogramming that can be done in my office. This allows the technicians in the radio shop to focus on the repairs requiring use of various test equipment available in the repair facility. I also periodically dispatch out to the missile field on service calls to improve and maintain my proficiency on the radio equipment.
Finally bought a house on the outskirts of Great Falls. I was renting an old farm house near Fairfield, but the price of gas made the daily commute too expensive. I like working on the Air Force base, but prefer to live out in the rural country areas. The new home is outside city limits, but not by much. My morning drive to work has been cut in half, from almost 1 hour to just under 30-minutes. My wife, Barbara, grew up in the nearby town of Fairfield, so the Great Falls area is home to her.
