Bruce's Story
After graduating from Bayonne High School in 1964, I attended Union Junior College and Salem College (WV). I earned a BA degree from Salem and was commissioned a U.S. Marine Second Lieutenant in May 1969. I began active duty in June 1969. I am a Vietnam Veteran (2 tours) and served on active duty for 27 years, retiring with the rank of Colonel in 1998. I worked for the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. from 1998 to 2002 as Director National Security and Foreign Affairs. From August 2002 until the present, I have worked at the Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office. I work on accounting for missing servicemen from past wars. I will probably retire from my current job in 2013.
However, in 2012 we remodeled our kitchen and did several other home maintenance/improvement projects so I might have to work longer.
While on active duty, I attended Pepperdine University's school of continuing education at Quantico Marine Base from 1976-1977 and earned an MA in Human Resources Management. From 1988-1989 I attended the Naval War College in Newport, R.I. and Salve Regina University earning MA degrees from both schools.
My wife and I were married in 1974, we have three adult sons. My oldest son is a Marine Corps officer and a veteran of 3 tours in Iraq and two in Afghanistan.
I have retired from my volunteer work with a Boy Scout Venturing Crew and turned it over to younger adult leaders. I now do family camping which I enjoy. I have all the toys for comfortable camping in the outdoors. I enjoy working around my home, and spending time with friends and family. I am a New York Yankees and NY ...Expand for more
Giant fan. I love Labrador retrievers. My died in 2009, and I miss him, but I don't have another one yet. I enjoy running and exercising daily, hiking, biking, listening to music, watching sports, and reading and drinking a little beer and wine for the vitamin and mineral content.
I now have two Granddaughters and one grandson who are the light of my life. I'd like a couple more grandsons in the future. I love being in the outdoors.
I retired from my federal civil service job on July 31, 2015. I am now in the process of trying to figure out how to make the most out of my retired years. This is new territory for me. I have been working since I was in college and full time since I graduated from college and went on active duty.
On October 31, 2015, I completed docent training at the National Museum of the Marine Corps and started serving as a volunteer docent on November 9, 2015. I like working there and helping others enjoy their visit to the museum and surrounding grounds, The museum is a special place for Marines, but it is a great place for the general public to learn about the U.S. Marine Corps contributions to our country and the sacrifices it takes to keep our country free. Also, on August 1, 2015, I was appointed as the POW/MIA Coordinator of the Korean War Veterans Association. This is also a volunteer position. For the part three months I have been engaged in supervising and actually doing several home improvement projects. We still have one major home improvement project that begins on November 30. By Christmas, the projects should be completed and ready for the winter.
