Bruce's Story

Lets see; after my glorious years (especially my last one) spent at Northview where I honed my acting and athletic skills (haha) to a fine marble sharp point I ventured out into the real world and immediately lost the love of my life. I overcame that setback by fiddling around at Mt SAC for a couple of years trying to find a direction in life that was interesting and profitable but alas, this was not to happen. Along the way I at least found the job that would eventually (Sept/1979) launch me into a career of leading people to perform work that I didn't want to do (I managed Housekeeping departments in hospitals (15) all over the country for 30+ years for 3 different contract management firms). I married the first time to a perpetually dissatisfied and unhappy person that ended 6 years later when I discovered with the help of a professional that I just wasn't as bad a person as my partner was trying to convince me that I was.. The Great thing that did come from that experience though was the birth of my Daughter Jennifer. She is 26 now and just gave birth to my first blood grandchild in Jan of this year. The other Great thing that came from this first marital experience is that I would never again accept another's definition of me as gospel without stringent evaluation and confirmation (I became my own man!). Unfortunately for this person I was not intelligent enough to bring this partnership to a positive experience but we have become friends now and we share our moments of deep pride in our daughter's success in life. On August 8th, 1987 I married again but this time to someone who was as much interested in encouraging me to be the best that I was capable of as she was in being the person that I would want to stay with. She taught me that if you want someone to stay with you then you must do things that make them want to stay with you which we both have been practicing undyingly ever since. With my marriage to Peggy came 2 wonderful children (13 and 14 at the time) who have produced 6 grandchildren of their own ranging from 21 years of age to 5 years of age. Each of them are Jewels in their own right. I never did pursue my "acting" career although many opportunities have presented themselves to me. I guess i never lost the childlike ability and desire to pretend and it manifests itself in my leadership style and public speaking engagements I participate in now. I don't really need the accolades I sought after in High School now so the stage just does not appeal to me now. I remain physically active to this day (I wouldn't consider myself athletic anymore) by golfing, walking, hiking and yes, I still play a lot of Frisbee primarily in the form of Frisbee Golf....Expand for more
One of my aspirations is to develop, build and manage World Class Frisbee Golf (legally called "Disc" Golf) courses all over the world! My "Illusions" of Grandure have never been so active and possible as they are now. I now live in the SF Bay area and probably will live out my remaining years in this area. I love the diversity of life available to me here that can be experienced within minutes to a few hours. I am now the manager of Support Services (housekeeping, dietary, patient transportation, PBX, engineering, security, and parking and transportation (shuttle service) for the largest hospital in the Sutter Health 27 hospital system and oversee a little over 900 staff and leadership... Not bad for a High School education. Some of my other highlights in life are that I have taught Process Improvement at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, developed an entirely new business division for a SoCal based firm, rode my 10 speed bike from Los Angeles to Eugene, Oregon over a 3 week period of time via hwy 395, and probably 3 million other less remarkable experiences that I won't waste the pixels to write them. Mom and Dad are gone but brother Mike and sisters Linda and Chris are still taking my calls from time to time. Other than Diana Alley and Billy McPherson (sorry if I spelled your name wrong Billy) I have not had any contact with my friends back in old Covina and Northview (my fault not theirs) since my departure from the area shortly after leaving NVHS. But interesting longings are stirring these days and it seems as though my thoughts are turning toward embracing such engagement again. Only time will tell The latest chapter of my life which started shortly after my 50th birthday has seen me quit smoking cigarettes after 30 years of smoking, I also quit consuming adult type beverages (I realized that I better hang on the last remaining trillion or so brain cells) after 40+ years of varying degrees of sobriety. My eating behaviors have changed such as to lower my overall cholesterol number from 375 to a medically acceptable level I have also and most importantly begun rediscovery and redefining my understanding of my faith and am reaping Glorious rewards for making this change.. I am now positioned to realize my goal for making these changes which is to be the very best I can be for My family and friends with an emphasis on being a cheerleader for people who are trying their best to be their best and to be alive and vibrant into old age... I can tell you that it is working!! So there it is, my very best effort to abbreviate 38 years of life into 4,000 words or less... hope it wasn't a waste of your time. It was fun for me.... Thank You!!
