Bruce's Story

Work Life I am a Consultant who covers small privately owned organizations that do not have Internal Audit Departments. I provide them with internal audit and internal controls background and assist with any government reporting. Prior to this position I am the Director of Internal Audit for National Beverage Corporation in Plantation, FL, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale, FL. Prior to National Beverage I worked for United Subcontractors at their HQ in Edina, MN. Also had the position of Director of Internal Audit. Before United Subcontractors I was Manager of Internal Audit at Snap-On Tools Corporation in Kenosha, WI. Wausau Paper was my home before Snap-On where I was Manager of Internal Audit. PQ Corporation of Valley Forge, PA was where I managed their international audit operations. I traveled to 19 foreign locations and managed and conducted audits at subsidiaries covering every continent except Africa. Before PQ I was with UGI Corporation / Amerigas in suburban Philadelphia, PA where I was Supervisor of Internal Audit and traveled all over the U.S. I was responsible for over 240 branches west of the Mississippi River. Prior to that I was with DuPont at their HQ in Wilmington, DE where I held a variety of increasingly responsible positions in internal audit, accounting and finance groups. Before DuPont, I was in graduate school obtaining my MBA degree with a major in Finance. Prior to that I served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Texas for four years. Military I served in the U.S. Air Force for four years from 1972 - 1976. All of my time was spent at three Texas bases. Most of it at Carswell AFB, just outside of Ft Worth, TX. I was in the Finance function and was responsible for the travel and relocation function. One of the things I still remember was the out dated computer systems we had. In fact, it required a full time representative from the computer company to be on site every day. I also remember the trays of computer cards and the old fashioned teletype machine we had. It was another era. I always wanted to be a Chief Internal Auditor when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a crazy idea. As it turns out, they were very wrong. I love to travel, domestically or internationally, and it can be by car, air, ship or rail. I have traveled to over 30 countries covering every continent except for Africa. I have only been in Florida for about three years, but already have taken eight cruises. Once year I travel with the American Association of Private Rail Car Owners who take an annual 12-16 day trip to different parts of the U.S. and Canada. We travel in privately owned rail cars and usually have 20-22 cars that are made up as a private train. In 2015 we will make a 14 day trip in the southeastern part of the U.S. I was also fortunate to fly British Airways Concorde just before it was discontinued. I used 125,000 British Airways miles, but every mile was worth it. I doubt most of us will fly at twice the speed of sound any time soon. It took 3 hours and 17 minutes from New York to London and 3 hours and 21 minutes back. There just enough time to enjoy the best airline meal I have ever had and listen to a top quality stereo system. The flight is so short they did not show movies. What a great trip to remember. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have exciting work, great facilities, and professional coworkers to be able to deal with the day-to-day. I have several heros, but one that comes to mind is Cary Grant. What a wonderful life he had and what an excellent actor he was. If I could only do one tenth of the things he did on and off screen, I would be a very happy person. Plus, there are many more heros out there. My inspiration comes from many different sources. I believe that a good education covering what you want to do combined with a great family and set of friends will help all of us to inspire to where we want to go in God's world. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is my high school history teacher, because started my interest in domestic and international history and the study of how complicated the world can be.. I love pets and have had several dogs during my life. The two that come to mind are McDuff, a great collie who I knew while I was in high school and undergraduate school. One funny...Expand for more
thing I remember was that he was not supposed to sit on the couch or chairs. One evening I came into the house from the garage and I heard a big noise. It turned out to McDuff jumping off of the couch and trying to look like nothing happend. I felt the couch and it was very warm. He was not a good dog when it came to hiding the truth. My other favorite dog was a wonderful Golden Retreiver. Her name was Samantha and she gave me many years of comfort. It was funny to watch her eat because she would chow down and make every scrap I placed in her bowl disappear. She would even lick the bowl to make sure nothing was left. You would have thought there were five dogs lined up that she was competing with. She was very smart and I believe that she really understood up to 50 words in English. Not only would she do what you asked, but she would acknowlege she understood. Also, what a clean dog she was. During her 12 and one half years of life she never once had an accident in the house or sat on any furniture. She knew the rules and followed them. Finally, whenever I brushed her long coat of hair, she was the most beautiful dog I had ever seen. I received so many comments as I walked her very proudly through the neighborhood. Two grand pets. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the family room and add on a den with a fireplace. My dream home would be a spacious one story with a beautiful yard. If I won $100 million, I'd give half of it to a couple favorite charities, then spend the rest on a new home, a new car and trip around the world. I had the chance to live in a dorm, a fraternity, an apartment and a duplex. Each represented a different stage of my college education. My career aspirations are to be the Chief Internal Auditor of a large international organization that has subsidiaries in 30 or more countries around the globe. My best friend would tell you I'm thorough, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as a good listener. I have been lucky not to have gained too much weight or list hair during my life. I am maybe 20 pounds heavier than high school and still have a full head of hair that is just starting to show some signs of gray. I enjoy dressing up in a tuxedo yet enjoy blue jeans and a flannel shirt. I like to save favorite pieces of clothes and last week I counted how many ties were in the drawer, 57 ties. Its funny how they go through cycles over the years. I share my home with me, which I find lonesome at times. I have a couple of things I am very proud of. They include my graduate and undergraduate degrees with honors. I am also proud of receiving the Certified Internal Auditor certification in 1994 and have been able to keep it up to date by taking over 40 hours of related courses and seminars each year. In 10 years, I hope to be retired. I'm going to get there by traveling to see what is new around the world. I have several very good friends who I have known for many decades. One of the best is a friend who was an officer in the Air Force. We enjoyed traveling all over each weekend and continue to stay in touch with one or two trips each year and daily messages on e-mail. Another good friend from my professional days has joined me for some short but amazing trips. One that comes to mind was a four day long weekend in Paris and Brussels. This trip involved a train trip to New York, a flight to Paris, a quick tour of Paris, a high speed train to Brussels, a fast tour of the city, a fast train back to Paris, a flight back to New York and a train back home. All of this in four days. We still joke about the trip today. My first job was at S S Kresge, where I got paid $1.50 per hour to assist running the lunch counter. What I remember most about it is all the free food I could eat while on duty. One of the best childhood memories I can recall was a great trip my dad, brother and I took to Yellowstone Park My mother liked visiting her three sisters in North Dakota and hunting for rocks. We decided to do something very different and took the car and drove on to Montana. We did everything from dude ranches, to country inns, the park and I even remember my dad falling asleep one afternoon while we were driving and I got the car up to 105 MPH. I took many years to tell him I did that and he gave me a big smile and said he was glad he was asleep.
