Bruce's Story

Bruce K. Martin 1727 Brooke Beach Drive Navarre, Florida (850) 939-2602 Bruce Martin married Gwen May on July 1, 1966, a year after completing Long Beach High School. Bruce and Gwen have two sons, Bruce Todd and Troy Scott. They have six grandchildren, four girls and two boys. Bruce and Gwen have been married for 42 years. They live at 1727 Brooke Beach Drive, Navarre, Florida. Education After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Bruce was awarded a full athletic scholarship in football and basketball as an athletic trainer at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he obtained a B.S. Degree in Physical Education, Health and Corrective Therapy (Physical Therapy). In 1978, he graduated ¿Cum Laude¿ from Tampa College, Tampa, Florida, with a B.S. Degree in Management. Career Bruce worked as a Certified Corrective Therapist for the State of Mississippi for two years after completing a B.S. Degree from USM. He began his federal service career as a Certified Corrective Therapist, Rehabilitation Medicine Service, at the VA Medical Center, Bay Pines, Florida, in 1973. In 1977, he was promoted to Coordinator, Rehabilitation Medicine Service, and served in that position at VA Medical Centers, Bay Pines, Florida; Birmingham, Alabama; and Atlanta, Georgia for a period of 12 years. Bruce changed career fields to become a Health System Specialist (Staff Assistant to the Director) at the VA Medical Center, Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1989. In that capacity, he acted as the Biloxi VA Medical Center¿s National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) Coordinator, and alternate for the Area Emergency Medical Preparedness Manager, Gulf Coast Region. n 1993, Bruce transferred to the Birmingham, Alabama, as the Emergency Medical Preparedness Office NDMS Area Emergency Manager for Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina, where he was actively involved with the Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina NDMS Hospitals and NDMS Disaster Medical Assistance Teams. Bruce designed the "CONSEQUENCE MANAGEMENT" Training and Exercises Series during the 1996 Summer Olympics Games in Birmingham, Alabama, which has organized into an annual national training exercise event. He deployed to both the 1996 Summer Olympics and the 2002 Winter Olympics for federal emergency preparedness activities. Bruce had a faculty appointment with the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Emergency Medicine at the rank of Research Instructor and Associate with the UAB Center for Disaster Preparedness. Bruce is a member of the FEMA Region IV Office of National Preparedness Interagency Support Group. On September 30, 2002, Bruce retired with 30 years of service from the Federal Government. On October 5, 2002, Bruce began employment with State of Florida¿s Department of Health for the Northwest Florida Domestic Security Task Force Region as a Regional Emergency Response Coordinator. In this capacity, he coordinates the health and medical emergency/disater response for the Florida Panhandle, and assists local health departments and medical facilities in Weapons of Mass Destruction awareness, preparedness, planning, response, and operations. He performs emergency planning and response duties under the Florida Department of Health¿s Office of Emergency Operations during any regional and/or state emergency/disaster. I'm planning on retiring from the State of Florida in October 2009. I will work for FEMA as a part-time contractor after retiring.
