Bruce's Story
I moved to New Bern, NC in 1977 and stayed with my sister who was in the military. While there attending a local community college, I met my wife Jennifer. We were married in Nov. 1978. We moved to Durham, NC in 1980. We were married for 8 years before our first son, Mark, was born. He's in the Air Force now. Ryan was born in 1991. He's 18 and is still at home and will go to school locally. I've been married for 31 years now. I've worked in Information Technology for the last 15 of those years and am currently a tech support person at Sony Ericsson. Yeah, they make the snazzy phones. But the plant here in the Research Triangle is shutting down in a few months, so I'll be looking for a job. Been there before, not worrying about it. Liked my job there, especially since they sent me to Canada sometimes. Oh, well. I'll make out. Always have.
2009 was a very rough year for me. My father died in February when I had planned to come with my oldest son and watch the Super Bowl at his house. Then in late February I had a severe attack (completely unfor...Expand for more
eseen) of diverticulitis. It hospitalized me for 2 weeks, first time since I was a kid. I ended up getting surgery for it in June. But I'm back in good health now and am back to the gym and jogging. You never know what's gonna happen.
I also converted to Catholicism in 2009, something I never thought I'd do in a million years. So that year was full of surprises. Presently I'm concentrating on writing and putting a web site together as well as studying for a certification for Windows 7 to keep my tech skills marketable.
I like to mind my own business, keep a sense of humor about things and avoid unnecessary drama like the plague. If I couldn't find a way to laugh about things I don't know how I'd make it, but I feel I've been pretty fortunate considering that I first came down here not knowing a thing about the seriousness of life and have managed to have a good wife and sons who've added a lot to me. I've failed more tests than I've passed without self-destructing. Nobody is more amazed than I am that I'm still here with some sense of sanity.
