Bruce's Story

Life Went to Canada College and graduated in 1971. Moved on to Stanford graduating in 1973 with a political science degree. Started my own business, Stanford Delicatessen in Stanford Shopping Center in the following year. Later I opened a deli-restaurant, Robinson's, in the same center. Alas, all that glitters is not gold. I became the man with lots of experience, but no money!! One of life's learning lessons. Sold the original deli and paid off my bills. Happily, along the way I met my future wife, and after 6+ years of dating, decided that it was time to make an honest woman of her, and married in 1983. We're still married, have two children, plus her original two, and four grandchildren (3 boys, 1 girl) from the older kids (40 and 37-year old kids!). The younger two are 18 and 21 years old. Gender is one of each for both pairs of children. After I sold my deli I interned with an attorney, but ultimately decided that practicing law was not for me. So I returned to work in the food business, working as a deli and catering manager and finally as a consultant for most of the next nearly twenty years. Over the course of the years of raising my kids, coaching them, and interacting as a volunteer with the YMCA, I came to realize how much I enjoyed working with kids, and decided I needed to somehow connect my lifework with children. After mulling the idea over for a few years I decided to take th...Expand for more
e plunge and return to college to earn a teaching credential. Working fulltime and raising a family it took me three years attending the university in the evenings, to earn my credential and a master's in education. As I finished my business consulting gig I was ready to begin a new career--teaching. It's been the wildest ride of my life--the hardest job I ever loved. Currently I am teaching fifth grade at Selby Lane School in Atherton. It's my fourth year teaching and I'm still having a ball, but working my butt off, too. My wife had a similar career change, but a few years earlier. After 17 years at Hewlett-Packard she decided to take advantage of the "early retirement" they were offering, and launch a home child care business. It hasn't exactly made her (or us) rich, but she doesn't regret it for a minute. For the most part, it allowed her to be a stay-at-home mom, and she, too, enjoys working with kids. Our two older kids live in Texas and Washington and we don't get to see our grandkids nearly as often as we'd like. The two younger ones are Bay Area based and attend college locally. April and I enjoy travelling, shopping, camping, hiking, and just putzing around. We look forward to being empty-nesters in the not-too-distant future, and plan to use my teaching job as an entry to going abroad for awhile. We live in Palo Alto and would love to reconnect with old classmates and friends.
