Bruce's Story
After stints as a photographer, teacher, carpenter, machinist, bookstore manager, Episcopal priest, writer, graphic artist and salesman, I finally went pro with what had long been just a hobby, building musical instruments: guitars, mandolins, hurdy-gurdys, banjos, basses, bouzoukis, ukuleles, lap and hammered dulcimers, cajons, kalimbas and more under the name "Rose Instruments." Although retired now, I continue to build on a limited scale. Of late, cigar box guitars have been all the rage, and in the hands of recording artists like Cathy Grier, Chris Duarte, Eric McFadden, Chris Aaron, Jim Ohlschmidt, Aaron Williams and many others mine have begun showing up on stages all over. irs here in the midwest. You can check these out on my Rose Instruments website if you've a mind to. I rarely play out any more myself, but do still get talked into performing occasionally, and was a regular at the Steel Bridge Songfest for many years.
Beyond this, I'm married to a wonderful girl, a "Yooper," born and raised on a farm outside Devil's Creek in Michigan's Upper Peninsula where I'd emigrated after leaving Chicago. I've also been blessed with five amazing children and a growing collection of impossibly adorable grandchildren. Though I hope to eventually return to the UP, we have been living for some years now in northern Wisconsin, land of cheese, sausages, Friday night fish fries, beer, and of course, the holy and sacred green and gold.
