Donald's Story
Life
After graduating from Alhambra, I attended CSULA and CSULB (Long Beach) but finished school at Utah State University (English/journalism). I also worked as a proofreader at the Los Angeles Times, as a machinist, and as a firefighter for the Forestry Service in beautiful Utah. At USU I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, finished school, and served a two-year proselyting mission in Argentina. It was a wonderful, unforgettable experience. I returned to earn a master's degree in English from Brigham Young University and to work as an editor for the LDS Church's curriculum department and then as an editor for a prominent book publisher. I am married to a Utah girl and live near Salt Lake City. We have five children, ages 7-18. I now work at BYU as associate director of publications/senior editor for the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship, a scholarly unit at the university that specializes in scripture research. School at Alhambra was a bittersweet experience for me. me, you know that I struggled with a speech impediment (a mild case of stuttering that nevertheless held me back in many ways). I am happy to report that I have largely overcome this problem. I have taught an editing class at BYU for nine years and have never had a problem with fluency. Life is great now. My children bring me the greatest happiness, and much of what I do revolves around them. My hobbies include playing the trumpet and bluegrass guitar (when I have time) and swimming (three times a week at BYU on my lunch break). I also have a mini-bike and dirt bike that my children and I have fun with. In the LDS Church I served nearly six years on the high council of the South Jordan Utah Highland Stake (a stake is a large ecclesiastical unit comprising several wards/parishes) before being called to serve as the bishop (as of September 2009) of my ward of more than 300 members. Wish any who read this bio best wishes in all that you do, and if you remember me at all, I hope the memories are more pleasant than not.
