Byron's Story
What have I been up to?
Well, I've just turned 60, but I was a youngster in our class too. So, I guess I was getting to be a senior citizen later than my peers were getting there. I finally made it though - that is; finally getting to an early retirement and being done with that "penitentiary of employment" that our educational system sets us up for.
I'm here to tell ya, it feels great too! Spent 37.5 years working for the Burlington Northern, Santa Fe Rail Road. It was a nice paycheck, but they actually made me feel just as insignificant as my graduating class did way back in 1973 when they forgot the specific day I told them that I was retiring on (my classmates didn't pay much attention to me either). But either story is a boring one that no one wants to hear about anyway.
Been married twice and divorced just as many times. Had two sons from two different mothers. The first son was born out of wedlock in 1975, but the guy his mom married after that adopted him, so he goes by a different last name. Both my kids went to Lincoln High, bu...Expand for more
t only my youngest graduated ... that I'm aware of. My oldest boy disowned me because of something I said to his mom before he was born. But the fact that she reported the statement to him when he was only nine years old might have a lot to do with his hatred for me too.
On the other hand, my youngest son, born in 1983, graduated in 2000 or 2001, and I'm still impressed that he's still married to his high school sweetheart who went to Lincoln High too, of course. Although I am happy for him and his wife, I am reminded of how lonely my class mates made me feel, and I get a bit "nostalgic" over how things might have been different for me had circumstances taken another course.
I still live in Nebraska, although I keep thinking about moving further away from Lincoln than what I already am. Time will tell how many states away from this one I can get to, but getting away from the state will be a lot easier than getting away from the memories of my youth. Nothing like a little rural serenity to surround yourself with as the days grow more golden.
