Callie's Story
Who am I? I am a work in progress. I am a teacher, writer, dreamer, musician, coach, singer, lover, director, mother, wife, friend, daughter, sister. I've been on a lot of adventures and journeys, and I've loved every one. There have been challenges and hurdles, of course, but I am grateful and growing . . .
After graduation from Centennial I wandered down to the San Luis Valley and attended Adams State College with the plan of having a double major, English and music. Kept the English, made music a minor and added a concentration in European history. Translated: pure liberal arts degree. Would you like large fries with your order, sir?
The night before I graduated college I was offered a job at the local newspaper in Alamosa, so that began a short career in reporting/journalism. I worked for the Valley Courier and then the South Fork Tines. After spending the winter of 86 in Washington state as an intern for the Wenatchee World paper, I realized I wanted to return to the Valley and earn a teaching certificate. Back to ASC. Married Kent in '88.
Hired parttime to teach at ASC. While there I began working on a masters degree, which I earned in '91. Had first daughter in the frigid month of January '92. Fell in love with her.
Worked parttime for the Mineral County Miner, worked odd jobs in the summers, wrote as much as possible, raised my lovely daughter. Had daughter #2 in August of '95. In June of '95 we moved from Creede to Leadville. Wrote for the Herald Democrat parttime and taught parttime at Colorado Mountain College.
Moved to Wisconsin in '99. We still live in Packer country. I am currently employed full time as an English/language arts teacher at a high school of about 900 students. Kent works for the city. Our daughters are a sophomore and seventh grader.
Life is good.
We have a great church, wonderful friends, good health, a pond in the back, family members who love us, and music and laughter in our lives.
We miss Colorado and hope to return someday.
We visit the SLV and Creede (Pueblo, too, of course) every summer.
I sing in the shower, I rewrite music lyrics, I sing Queen songs to my students, I write poetry, I read.
