Cammie's Story
Life (my favorite saying)
I live in Bakersfield and have since I left Lompoc in 1977 to go to college (Cal State University, Bakersfield). It was one of about 2 that had my specific major: Laboratory Science. It only took me 5 years to finish. While in college I met and married Steve Laird. We have two sons: Matthew (31) and Andrew (24). Matt lives in town, is married and and we are grandparents to 3 beautiful children. Andrew just moved out and is in his senior year of college. I am a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (per State of CA). I have directed/supervised a doctors office laboratory, a hospital laboratory, and a large clinic laboratory. Right now I am just a "worker bee" and I love it: no more "raising" employees.
Steve & I have been very active in our sons activities. From school (parochial school K - 12), sports (football, basketball, baseball, and soccer), and church activities. I even coached Andrew's T-Ball team that consisted of his Kindergarden classmates (co-ed); and boy did we have fun! Andrew played club so...Expand for more
ccer for 6 years so we have been all over So Cal.
Now that we are almost empty nesters, we get to pick what we want to do. We have been active in Sheriff's Activities League youth football team which Matt has been a Coach. We also help out the Golden Empire Gleaners, a local food bank. Living in the "bread basket of America", the San Joaquin Valley, after the machines go through and harvest the crops there is still produce left. Hence the word "Gleaners". Volunteers hand pick &/or receive that which is left and distribute it to the community. They also receive many cases of chips from Frito-Lay; other items are received from other local grocers as well as community food drives.
I love being "Grammie" to Joshua and Sara; Tyson is 15 (our daughter-in-laws oldest son) and can always use Grammie for a ride to or from the local hang outs. There's nothing better than getting a phone call from Joshua, asking if I can come over to play.
So far so good (I think).
