Candy's Story

Life Update 5-15-08 Had an awesome early spring river running time. Did the Salt for a day. A sort of disaster happened and our friends paddled farther than they should have and we had to "rescue them" by hiking 6 miles total, (the last two in dark with no headlamps AND after drinking beer all day. ) The boys who went too far had to deflate their duckies (50 lbs each) and carry them on their backs back to camp. Tough while it was happening, but a fun story to tell. Also, ran the Verde River for two days in late / early March in a paddle boat. What a trip. We had like 16 people total. Several class 3-4 rapids that scared the crap out of me. I love the water and paddling! Then, last weekend, 9 of us and our friends went to Rocky Point in Mexico and rented a condo for three days. That was the best beach vaca ever (in Rocky Point). I'll post some pics. Good friends, warm weather (after our frigid Flagstaff winter) and good party favors! Update 11-17-07 Another vacation to the Yucatan. Got back this past Tues. Sean and I went with our friends Becky and Matt. Becky and I are long time Flagstaff friends who met about 10 yrs ago when we moved here. Flew into Cancun, drove to Merida for Day of the Dead, drove to Tulum, then on to "La Isla Bonita" aka San Pedro in Belize. Actually had to fly to San Pedro b/c the ferry was down that day...It was a two week paradise! Still wanting to own some land in Tulum for a second home some day... Other big news is that Sean's dream of owning a business is coming true. He will leave his position as Chef at Cafe Espress at the end of Nov 07 to become owner of Artisan Bakery. It's a "turn key" opportunity for him to rent kitchen space for catering and take over baking pasteries for a locally owned coffee shop with four Flagstaff locations. Very exciting! For me, I finally burned out at Child Protective Services after 4 yrs. In retrospect, it was the worst job I ever had. Too much work, too stressful, too sad. But now, I'm a Vocational Counselor for the AZ State agency of Rehab Services Admin. We provide employmt servcies to folks with disabilities. I'm currently purchasing a client who is an amputee a computerized leg (he got to run for the first time in 7 yrs with this leg!) This job is awesome. I get to help people in a very direct way with immediate results. And the wk load is normal; no more feeling overwhelmed. Very thankful for a job where I don't have to be on-call 24\7 for a week at a time. Still no dog after Cross passed. But we're thinking and waiting until the opportunity presents itself. Kitty is doing great. Till next time...Candy General info: Life in Flagstaff Arizona is awesome! I live at 7,000 ft at the base of the San Francisco Peaks where skiing is very popular. Yet, I am close to the red rocks of Sedona where we spend summer weekends swimming and camping in Oak Creek Canyon. Flagstaff is a small college community that is rapidly growing in popularity. It is 150 miles from the Grand Canyon. After college, I decided that Florida was not the place for me, so my boyfriend Sean (my husband now) and I decided to travel the US in a VW bus to try and find a place that we could call home. We traveled for two months and ended up in Flagstaff after going to California and not liking it there. Moving away from the swamp was the best thing I ever did; though I do miss the ...Expand for more
ocean. These are definitely the best years of my life and I am so thankful for everything and everyone in my life. We had an outside wedding in the mountains at 11,000 ft at a place called Locket Meadow with 35 of our closest friends and family. Our friend, Eric Lenhart, became ordained and married us. I wrote our vows, as I still enjoy writing. We honeymooned in La Paz Mexico at the tip of the Baja. On our last day, a hurricane hit and we were stuck there for an additional three days with no running water or electricity...quite tragic as we were left with nothing but tequila! We've also been home owners for four years living in our dream home. It's a two story, unique, light filled home in the tall pine trees of the mountains. Not too big, but perfect for the two of us and our cat. We have one stray white cat (Kitty) who chose us as her guardians. They say it's the pagan way for the animal to choose the human! We also have two aquariums in the house and many other fish in our outside backyard pond that Sean built several years ago. Although we've contemplated having children, we've decided against it. The world is too populated...and I guess it's our way of helping the Earth. But I also enjoy my independence and the freedom to do what I want, when I want. In sum, Life Is Good! School High School was too werid! Wouldn't choose to do it again. College Update 11-17-07 With my current position as a Vocational Counselor, the State of AZ will be paying for me to get my Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. I will become a Certified Rehab Counselor. I can choose to pay for an additional 15 credit hrs to become a Liscensed Professional Counselor, which I'm seriously considering. At first, I was thinking about becoming a doctor, but reevaluated my plan after realizing how much time and energy it would take. I changed majors to Psychology and loved it. At my current job with the State of Arizona, they will pay for me to go back to college, so that is in my long term plan- to get my Master's in Social Work. Workplace Update 11-17-07 Burned out at CPS and am now a Vocational Counselor for Rehab Services of AZ with the State of AZ. It was a transfer for me within the State and I got to keep my same pay, which was very good for me. I love my new job and am happy not to be oncall 24 7 for a week at a time...they will also be paying for me to get my Master's in Rehab Counseling. I majored in Psychology in college, but realize now that I should have majored in social work, because that's primarily what I'm doing now. I started working for Goodwill in Flagstaff as an Employment Training Specialist helping people with disabilities obtain and maintain employment. Was promoted within to the Manager of Human Services where I managed several social service programs for people with disabilities. The Goodwill in Flagstaff was going through financial crisis in 2003, so I decided to leave... A friend of mine worked for Child Protective Services (CPS) and told me about an opening there for a CPS Specialist position. I interviewed and got the job three years ago. It's harder than I expected, but I really can't imagine doing anything else. There are nights when I can't sleep b/c I'm thinking about a family... but it's rewarding to protect children. A large part of my job involves working with attorneys, going to court and testifying.
