Carl's Story
Life
Since high school, the first major event in my life occurred in October of 1981. I collapsed one Friday--an X-ray found a large, cancerous mass in my chest. Fortunately, I completely recovered to roam the earth once again.
(While reading the next 3 paragraphs, imagine the theme from "The 3 Stooges" in the background).
After the hospital, I thought I could build up my strength by delivering bottled water. On my second day of training a woman ran a red light and broadsided our truck. She hit us so hard she knocked it upside down--the two other unrestrained guys landed on me, and I crawled out with a broken collarbone. (The day before, these guys wanted to play miniature golf. I tripped while chasing the ball. So now, by the time I get to the hospital after the truck accident, itÂs disclosed to me that I have a broken collarbone from the truck and a broken big toe from the miniature golf course. ThatÂs two bones broken within twenty-four hours. So help me.)
A year later, I took a weekÂs vacation, and a friend suggested we go skydiving. To me, this sounded like a great opportunity after a frightening couple of years to do something that might otherwise scare me.
So we went through our one-day class, got in the plane, took off and jumped. I came out of the plane without fear, got control of the risers, and targeted myself almost perfectly into the bullÂs-eye and felt my left leg crumple under me. The diagnosis was a broken left fibula, distal end (i.e., a broken ankle).
I no longer skydive.
Eventually I went to work for a video dating service called Great Expectations as the guy who did the taped interviews. It wasnÂt a bad gig, and I never got injured doing it.
One day (November 18, 1985) IÂm standing at the front desk, and my wife walked in. Of course I didnÂt know she was my wife at the time, but life is full of surprises (as you can tell). Joyce (my future wife) and I started a videotaped interview. To make a long story short, we were married August 30, 1986; we donÂt have a video of our wedding, but Joyce and I are the only couple I know of that has their first conversation entirely documented on videotape.

has advised me stay out of airplanes altogether.
While continuing to write screenplays and a couple of novels, I became a Microsoft Certified Trainer. That means that I train people to use MicrosoftÂs operating systems. Yes, I have crossed over to the dark side.
Joyce and I purchased a timeshare in Sedona; in October 2000, we took a dream trip for a week in VirginiaÂs Shenandoah Valley. From there, we branched out to Civil War battlefields and D.C. We did a lot of walking and lot of videotaping and had a generally wonderful time. It was a trip that we knew was going to be fun right from the get-go when we got off the plane at Dulles Airport and we almost bumped into Rob Reiner at the baggage claim. Joyce and I were both wearing our ÂGore/Lieberman 2000Â pins, which precipitated an animated chat with Reiner about how important it was to get Gore elected (sorry Republicans, but we told you soÂ
.)
In April 2001, we took two weeks to visit Britain, including a week in Scotland and a week in England. We did an overnighter in Belfast at my insistence, because IÂm working on a book that begins in that city, and I also wanted to see where the Titanic was built. We spent most of our time there hiding from the freezing North Atlantic cold. In fact, we had trouble getting our room heating to work properly; I explained to a maid (diplomatically) that we were from Southern California and we were not used to the cold (translation: the weather in your country sucks). ÂOh, she brightened, ÂHow is it over thar, then? Garjus, isnÂt it? (Gorgeous, isnÂt it?) I simply replied that it was just a whole lot warmer.
As for the present: Joyce and I live in Anaheim Hills with our two cats and a dog. I maintain an active presence in the online space community and have published a couple of articles pertaining to the history of Project Apollo. I'm also the credited co-writer on a documentary premiering in 2019, "Searching For Skylab."
As of this writing (January 2019) I'm seeking out a new job after being laid off from the company I've worked for since 1991. My field is instructional design with a heavy emphasis on video production and editing.
