Carl's Story

I was born on July 16, 1951, in Latrobe, PA, the son of Carl E. and Madelena (Helen) Rullo Haberl. My father worked as a machinist at Kennametal for 30 years. My mother was a housewife and later had jobs as a waitress at the Latrobe Elks and in sales at the Troutman's downtown store. They raised 4 sons and were devoted parents. I attended Holy Family School in Latrobe, PA for grades 1-8, graduating from there in 1965. After two years at Greensburg Central Catholic High School, I transferred to Greater Latrobe High School where I graduated in 1969. After high school, I attended St. Vincent College and graduated with a BA degree in history in 1973 and also obtained my PA teaching certification. I taught in public schools in Louisa County (1973-74) and Warren County, Virginia (1974-75). Between those 2 years, I attended classes at Seton Hill College and added French to my teaching certificate. In January, 1976, I accepted a teaching position with the Colegio Cristobal Colon (Columbus School), an American school (nursery-12th grade) located in Medellin, Colombia. I lived in South America for 2 years, traveling extensively throughout the country, and teaching in the high school (1976) and in the elementary school (1977). I returned to the United States in November, 1977. In the spring of 1978, I was hired to finish out the school year at St. John the Evangelist School in Latrobe, PA. I had a fifth grade homeroom but taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grade science, social studies, and physical education. I spent an additional year at St. John's (1978-79) before being hired by the Central Greene School District in Waynesburg, PA. That is where I spent the rest of my teaching career, starting with the 1979-80 school year and ending with the 2005-06 term. I taught social studies and French at Waynesburg Central High School for 27 years. During that time period, I took students on 7 field trips to Quebec province in Canada. In 2006-07, I took a year of sick leave for health reasons and officially retired from the profession on June 5, 2007. ...Expand for more
For 8 years (1998-2006), I had a vacation home in Deep Creek, MD, which I sold for the same health reasons. In March, 2006, I moved from Waynesburg and bought a home in Washington, PA, where I currently reside. I became actively involved in the Barack Obama campaign in late 2007 and was an Obama delegate from the 12th Congressional District. My name was on the April 22nd PA primary ballot...even in my old hometown of Latrobe. I had the opportunity to meet Senator Obama in Pittsburgh on March 28, 2008. I did not attend the party convention in Denver in August 2008 but remained an ardent Democrat and a Barack Obama supporter. I continued to participate in Democratic Party politics here in Washington County, including working for President Obama's re-election in 2012, the Tom Wolfe for PA Governor campaign in 2014, and most recently in 2016, the PA Democratic Party coordinated campaign for Hillary Clinton, Katie McGinty, and all other down ballot candidates. Elected in May, 2014, I currently serve as a member of the Washington County (PA) Democratic Committee, representing South Strabane Township - Precinct 2. In 2014-15, I held the position of Committee Secretary. Like my father, I am proud to be a Democrat and a former union member. For 28 of my more than 33 year teaching career, I was a member of the National Education Association, the Pennsylvania State Education Association, and the Central Greene Education Association. Today, I am also a proud member of the NAACP - Washington County (PA) branch. Both of my parents are deceased now, having passed away within 3 months of each other in 2001. My father was a World War 2 hero having earned the bronze and silver stars among other medals. My mother was his devoted and loving spouse of 51 years. I still make occasional visits each year to Latrobe... to see cousins there and in Greensburg...and to St. Marys Cemetery where my beloved parents and other family members are buried. My plot is also located there below my father...but I am not planning on joining him or my relatives anytime soon.
