A *realist* views the world as it is and doesn't care - optimists see them as pessimists, pessimists think they are optimists - they often follow behind a plow behind a horse's ass; an *optimist* ignores the world as it is and believes things are great and will get better - they are gullible and naive - gullible and naive, politicians love them. "Optimism and stupidity are nearly synonymous" - Hyman Rickover; a *fatalist* is not a pessimist, fatalists view the world as it is and invariably believe things will get worse - requiring no evidence whatsoever - they are boring because they do nothing; a *pessimist* observes the world as it is and remains a skeptic, they require proofs that things are better or will get better, they are investigators and scientists. Of course, I'm a pessimist.
So what happened? The usual B.S.: high school, Democratic National Convention, college, the draft, LBJ, Nixon, the Navy, Yom Kippur War, Cyprus, marriages, divorces, dogs, cats, tropical fish, whales and dolphins, cars, photography, cycling, more college, lab work, many stitches, many broken bones, work, work, work, retirement. Eight states, four countries, three universities, twenty ships, aircraft and submarines, two decent jobs, four good friends - two remain dead, countless assholes - which probably makes me one. Starting up with dogs and cats again as they are trustworthy. Never met anyone from high school nor Illinois that I know of. Mildly interesting how few remain stuck in my memory: Mazur, Gardner, McCandles, Lederer, Milleville, Schmidt, Kramer. I interact with more people from the Navy than HS (zero) - I think the Navy pissed on the colored chalk that was HS - funny how something important does that. What do you believe happened 55 years ago? . . . quiet desperation; . . . best of times, worst of times?
I've owned two cars over the years that were an absolute blast to drive: A 1973 Superbeetle that I bought in Italy, and a 1974 Alfa 2000 GTV I bought in Texas. Alfas are the gorgeous, smart redheads of the automobile world - I o...Expand for more
ughta' know. I don't have a car metaphor for blondes, never owned one (that's a joke, f'r crissakes) - Mercedes maybe: cold, uncomfortable, unreliable, overrated, not worth the maintenance cost. I could be wrong.
"When was the last time you were happy?" Nothing comes to mind.
"Buy the ticket, take the ride. . . and if it occasionally gets a little heavier than what you had in mind, well. . . maybe chalk it up to forced consciousness expansion: Tune in, freak out, get beaten.” - Hunter S. Thompson
“So we shall let the reader answer this question for himself: who is the happier man, he who has braved the storm of life and lived or he who has stayed securely on shore and merely existed?” -Hunter S. Thompson
Five drugs that might have saved our generation - CBD, THC, LSD, MDMA, psilocybins - all perfectly illegal. WTF?! Instead, we were force-fed placebos or worse: statins, benzos, opiods, SSRIs, 12-step, religion, fascism, Agent Orange, guns, hate, apathy, fear. Feeling better yet? 1968 is the year that changed America - for the worse: remember Vietnam, MLK, Memphis, Paris, Bobby Kennedy, L.A., Biafra, Czechoslovakia, Mexico City, the Pueblo? How about the '68 democratic convention- protests and the National Guard, what goes around . . . 16,899 US servicemen died in Vietnam in 1968. It's probably the year that the idea of America was placed on a ventilator.
Me, now? $$ Photorestoration, Film Photography, Audio restoration. Real memories restored for money. When a tree falls in the yard, I'm a woodcutter.
I was recently complimented on not getting old and becoming an asshole. But I did get old. So many people I knew growing up have lost their minds and drunk the various Kool-Aids. Guess they never learned critical thinking.
Stupid observations: if you have / had an IQ of 100, half the people in the USA are less fortunate than you - you know a lot of them; 100-125 you probably can find work; if you have an IQ of 125, one in sixteen people are in your cohort; if you have an IQ of 140+, you're gonna have problems finding work and friends.
