Carl's Story

Life I live in Fayetteville, GA now after having lived in Hawaii since 1991, where I worked as a police officer with Honolulu Police Department, 15 years in patrol and 8 years in Narcotics/Vice (DEA Airport Task Force, Regional Complaints, Morals, and Forfeiture). One of my last assignments was to the Central Patrol Bureau working in East Honolulu as a Field Lieutenant on Night Watch as the Watch Commander (uniformed patrol working out of the HPD Main Station). My last assignment was Oahu North Shore working out of the Wahiawa Station until I retired Dec 2016. Before moving to Hawaii I lived in San Jose, CA where I went to college and graduated in 1987. I was also working at NTSI from 1984-1991. Before moving to San Jose, CA, I was in the US Army from 1972-1982. I joined out of high school after graduation, and was stationed at Ft. Ord, Washington State, Augsburg and Mannheim, Germany, Louisiana, and Hawaii. I got out of the Army as a staff sergeant in 1982. I moved to Huntington Beach in 1970, where I graduated from Marina H.S. in 1972 (by the skin of my teeth). The highlight of my high school experience in 1971 at Marina High School was being a walk-on starter to their varsity baseball team. This team went to the CIF SS playoffs representing the Sunset League. We lost in the first round to the eventual CIF SS Championship round losers. Before moving to Huntington Beach I lived in Arcadia, CA. In Arcadia, I went to Holy Angels from 3rd to 6th grade, then finished sixth grade at Holly Avenue. I attended First Avenue Junior High, and attended Arcadia High School in my sophomore year (1970). So much for ancient history. I have been married since 1994, my wife Teri was a Vice Principal at a Wahiawa Elementary School, acting principal, then a district administrator until she recently retired. I have a married daughter who is 42, an EMT graduate, was a pastor on staff at her church, now director of the church's college program. She has seven sons (yes I am a grandfather!). I also have a married son 40 who has two step sons, a daughter (my only grandaughter) and grandson. My 36 year old son lives in Oregon and is a flight attendant for Continental Airlines, daughter, who has a nine year old boy, is 34 years old, graduated from University of Hawaii with her Master's Degree. Son 32 who graduated from his Aircraft Mechanics program and works in his field. My 11 grandsons are aged between 22 and nine years old with one ten year old grand daughter. Amazing, huh? School Some of the people I met from grade school to high school graduation remain some of the people I love most in this world. I don't think any of us left this era of our life unscathed, but also at the same time inspired. I suppose the main lesson to be learned at this point is that we are only here for a short time, and we should make the most of it. Everyone we started out with is not with us now. aboration. The common history we share is important. I would welcome any of my former classmates to contact me if for no other reason to say "hi" and share where the years have brought you. I also am on facebook under my name. College My San Jose-Evergreen Valley College (Police Academy) experience was a cornerstone of my future. I hope I am remembering him right, but my Tac was Officer Keith Watanabe of Milpitas Police Department. His help was invaluable to me to graduate and my further career in law enforcement. My classmates were pretty special too. Those of you still on the job- continue to be safe. I surely do remember the difference my San Jose Bible College experience made in my life. To say nothing of the spiritual edification, it taught me how to study and achieve academic success. I had some great teachers- Mike Bowman, Reuben Ratzlaff, Dallas Meserve, Cathy Foote, to name a few. My thanks for your efforts. Workplace While working at NTSI I met numerous law enforcement officers who inspired me to pursue law enforcement as a career. I am indebted to Jeff Williams of the CHP, Don Bacon of Sunnyvale DPS, Dave Gullo of Campbell PD, Dave Paulides of San Jose PD and Ken Allen of Santa Clara County SO to name a few, for their encouragement and support on my life's main career path. I am also grateful to Ed Nemetz for opportunities given to me at NTSI. I worked for National Traffic Safety Institute from 1984 until 1991. I was first hired as a traffic school level one and level two instructor, and then later was hired on-staff to be the manager of program operations. I also was a site administrator (called a principal), and was responsible for development of state annual in-service training. Military When I joined the Army December 12, 1972, and we had draftees in my basic training company. We also had guys who were returning to Vietnam (prior service). Initially I had a great drill sergeant whose name was Larry Lane. He has remained one of my leadership role models since meeting him. I was initially an Infantryman (11B) then a mortarman (11C), then a Forward Observer and Fire Support Sergeant (13F). When I got out of the Army in 1982, I was a Staff Sergeant E-6 who was an instructor at the United States Army NCO Academy at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii 25th Infantry Division. I was an instructor for 30 cycles. I also attended the Basic NCO Officer Academy and was the honor graduate for my class. I taught at PNCOC (Primary NCO Course) for 17 cycles (classes) assistant instructor at BNCOC for 3 cycles (Reconaissance Course) and Senior Instructor and Instructor at PLC (Primary Leadership Course) for 10 cycles. I am still indebted to the Senior instructor for the Reconnaisance Course SFC Joe Anderson (who was a pillar of strength in a tough time), and my mentors Jorge Sanchez and Jeff Baker who both taught me invaluable lessons, and Marita Wolfarth-McKee for helping me to become a proficient instructor at the NCOA Hawaii.
