Carl's Story

Life Of everything I've done in this life, places I've been, things I've learned, it's to be yourself, trust yourself. I couldn't wait to get out on my own, I moved out of the house when I was Still 17 completely unprepared for the world, but ready to dig in and be on my own. My parents separated when I was 14, and my overprotective mother wouldn't even let me have a driver's license, let alone a car! (didn't do wonders for my dating life at McLane, let me assure you..) so you know I had to get out of that and move on. I did any job I could do, (The love of my newfound freedom outweighed my pride) at age 18 I worked at a produce warehouse at night in the Teamsters union with a bunch of hard livin foulmouthed men and a boss that was never in a good mood (I accidentally dumped a $200 load of avacados right at his feet once) I learned that I could work as hard as anyone, but I wanted to play music, be in a band! I'd get off work, go home to my apt. and pick up my guitar and play out all my unexpressed feelings (I once got evicted for playing the star spangled banner with my amp stack on 10...It was the 4th of July man...the guy had no sense of humor, you know?) As it just so happened, There was a bass player in my apt. complex who took notice of that performance and eventually asked me to be in a band we named THRUST. I had no idea at the time that most people would bypass the rocket power and go straight to the sexual innuendo. We wore tight pants and platform shoes, and opened shows for STYX, Eddie Money, Did our own shows, thought we were cool. After a few years of that roller coaster ride, I started playing in other more musically diverse bands, where I was able to learn from really good musicians some of the more subtle nuances of music (that you don't often hear out of a 100 Watt Marshall stack) I bounced around in several bands, and finally decided to ...Expand for more
move to L.A. Wow, what a struggle the first couple of years were. I went from being in a place where everyone knew me and things were pretty easy, to a place where people avoid eye contact and didn't return phone calls. The money I was making in cover bands was always just barely enough to get by. Finally, after our Agent sent us to Anchorage Alaska to play six nights a week 4 70 minute sets a night, (singers lost their voices, one of the callouses on my fingers came off one night) I finally decided I had had it, I was going to get a job, and put this aside for awhile. This time I ended up learning a trade that most everyone says I am extremely good at, building and finish carpentry. In the last several years, I have worked for the rich & famous, architects, designers, spec builders and homeowners, and all the work I do now is by referral. Sometimes, my clients even think they're interviewing me for their job (I'm interviewing them for mine, I will not work for rude people, I'd rather go out on the ocean and wait for the next phone call) And after all the various people I've dealt with, I have learned to depend on my intuition, the same one I had as a child, that saw thru all the BS grownups propped their lives up with, (sometimes people need spam filters too) Anyway in closing here, I still have written and produced music thru the years, My music has been on Entertainment Tonight, various video productions, got me into ASCAP and I'm currently working on a self produced album of all my best instrumental themes, which will be available early next year at carlnewtonmusic.com I REALLY enjoyed seeing all of you at the 30 year reunion 10/9/04 and my only regret is I didn't get to spend enough time catching up with all of you! I'd love to hear from anyone from the old days, so if you read this rambling diatribe, shoot me an email and say hi! Thanks........Carl
