Carlene's Story

Life Hi all! This is an interesting page - I guess they automatically assume that I have something amazing to tell you. They are wrong. After graduation I got married in November 1968 and in January 1970 had twins (Mary and Robert Thompson). In July 1973 I had another girl (Melinda). We lived in Iron Mountain, Michigan; Des Moines, Indianola, Carroll, and Fort Dodge. Then in 1995 we divorced and I moved back to Des Moines (thankfully, I came home!). In 1996 I became a grandma and am still loving EVERY minute of that. In 1997 I married Tom Chebuhar and inherited two more sons. Between us now we have 7 grandchildren and a life of happiness. Not very exciting but VERY happy. In 2014 we officially retired and became "Winter Texans". Due to Tom's health issues we have been full time Texans since 2018. is one of the best memories I have - and I have worked with several other PROUD East High graduates - what a loyal group we are! On March 30, 2022, my baby, Melinda, suddenly and unexpectedly passed away in her home. She had never fully recovered following a surgery a year and a half ago. She was hospitalized several times as doctors failed to discover the problem. Instead of sending her somewhere else (Mayo, Iowa City, anywhere! ) they would just send her home to "watch it". Now her son and step-daughters lost a mom, her husband lost a wife, her sister and brothers lost a sibling and I lost my baby. Our medical system stinks. My soul is in agony. This year gets worse and worse. Last Thursday, November 10, my husband passed away. I can barely breathe some days. Losing two people I love deeply within 7 1/2 months just isn't right. I am lost and heartbroken.
