Carlos Everett's Story

After High School CHAPTER ONE I attended Bakersfield the College (BC), up on Panorama Drive, I was also a night cook (graveyard shift) at Denny's at the bottom of the Grapevine I-5 South (before it apparently blew up and was rebuilt next to Ranch House on the North side of I-5. After BC (that sounds really old) I enlisted in the Navy. Went to Boot Camp, Radioman "A" school and International Morse Code School (IMCO) in San Diego, CA. I was told that my entire IMCO class was going to River Boats. When I received my orders they were for NAVCOMMSTA Harold E Holt Exmouth Western Australia, instead. No complaints from me and my younger brother Robert "Marce", who was also a Radioman in Navy was South of the equator to meet me upon landing at Learmonth Air Terminal, 30 miles south of the main base. He left Australia about one month later. So, that was brother duty !!! My older brother, who was also a Radioman in the Navy was stationed in a Japan at about the same time I was in Australia. I was required to board the Air Force C-140, out of Travis Air Force Base (AFB) wearing Se...Expand for more
rvice "Dress Blues" (Cracker Jacks). I heard my name called out, to check in for boarding the plane, it was my cousin SSgt Benjamin FLORES, USAF, (Class of '67) who had called out my name. I knew he was in the Air Force but I didn't know he was at Travis AFB. I don't believe he knew I was in the Navy, either. When I left California, it was just about winter in Cali; but, about 95° in Australia, their Summer. After I left Australia, I went to Japan for my next set of orders. One day, after playing a coulple games of racquet ball, after a mid-watch, I observed this lone individual walking across a vacant parking lot as I was about to leave the base for the next three days. He looked familiar, so I whipped my bike into that parking lot, after him. It was my older brother who was now in the Navy Reserves assigned to a Navy P3 Orion flight squadron. They few into Atsugi, Japan and he and a friend made their way, via train, to Yokosuka looking for me. We spent the day together and headed back to Atsugi the next day.
