Carmen's Story

Life My journey since graduation has taken me in a number of directions. Yet, in a certain sense, I have never left P.A.H.S., having taught there for over 20 years! Furthermore, I also pastored (in a very non-traditional sense) for over 13 years. My greatest joys, however, are those related to family, for which I am thankful. Educationally, I received my masters (M.Div.) in Apologetics (the field of study that seeks to demonstrate the reliability and attractiveness of a Christian world-view). In 2004, I completed my DTS (Doctor of Theological Studies) degree, with an emphasis on postmodern studies. My final project involved a study of matters related to the expression of Christian faith in a postmodern context. Basically, this was an effort to grapple with issues of truth and spirituality, seeking to determine what Christian faith ought to look (and act) like in today's world. While desiring to remain faithful to the biblical witness, my goal was (and is) to foster an...Expand for more
attitude of openness to the new things God may be doing today. A scaled down version of my doctoral project (Dangerous Blessing: The Emergence of a Postmodern Faith) has been published by Wipf & Stock Publishers. I am also a contributor to the New Dictionary of Christian Apologetics (InterVarsity Press, 2006). In 2007 I had another book published, again by Wipf & Stock. This one is called Why? Reflections on the Problem of Evil. In this work I consider the age-old issues of evil and suffering, seeking to make sense of how a good God can allow for so much pain and heartache. Instead of trying to provide a neat and tidy answer to every question, I attempt to provide a framework for thinking through these matters in an intelligent and hope-inducing way. I appear in the 2008 Edition of Marquis Who's Who in America. As of September 2008, I am ranked # 97 in the world, # 41 in North America, and # 39 in the USA, having recited Pi to 220 digits. Am I silly or what? :-)

At Greystone--Marilyn's birthday.

Cake (actually, cheesecake) delivery.
Out for Marilyn's birthday.
Very slow 7-miler--slippery surface for 1 mile and hurting calf for 2-3. Nice that I was able to complete the run, though.
Happy birthday to Marilyn, who has the look and energy of someone half her age and the wisdom of someone much older. I am blessed!
First 5-miler in two weeks. Slow and careful ... but calf feels pretty good right now. Hopefully, I am healed or at least healed enough. Halleluiah! :)

Trick-or-Treat night was a scream! :-) Despite the cold and rainy weather, we had 411 Trick-or-Treaters. (We set a record last year with 578.) Great night, and now Jake and his friends are downstairs watching one of the Hal
This trophy is for Bib Porter, who finished the run for diabetes this morning in honor of his mom. What makes Bib a deserving recipient is the fact that the run was cancelled due to snow, but Bib still traveled to Schuylkil
Many, many, many, many thanks to all of you who have sent (or will later send) birthday wishes! Family, friends, colleagues, former (and current) students, young, older (though not old)--all of you are each and every day (a
