Carol's Story

Hi, as you know if you are here my name is Carol (Anderson)Wnuk. I graduate from SGHS in Winter 1966. Scooted off to LBState (as it was called at that time)graduated received my Teaching Credential and immediately started teaching elementary school with LAUSD. I worked in South Central LA and Cudahy for 9 years. Injured my back helping to restrain a student who was breaking down, bashing his head into a wall due to having recently lost most of his family in a tragic accident. I married and in one weekend we went from a family of two with a dog, to a family of five with a dog. My daughter was born eleven week premature, weighing in at 3 lbs 7 oz. That weekend we also received custody of my husband's two boys, ages 5 and 6 from a previous marriage. Our daughter born in August was in intensive until November. When she reached the massive weight of 5 lbs 11 oz she came home and the fun really began. We moved into a larger home out in San Dimas, I couldn't return to work due to back injury, then we REALLY moved, to Minnesota. As they say there, Uff da! Transporting a native Californian to the upper mid-west in November isn't the best idea, we were moving into a resort on a pennisula (which we purchased) is definately not good to win the heart and mind of a California girl, me. Phew a great deal of work but I loved it, nature everywhere I was like a little child the first rupture of spring. However, my husband voiced repeatedly that this was the biggest mistake he had ever made. He left in June at our busiest time on a fishing resort with cabins, boats, motors, bait, small 3.2 beer bar and gas and oil. He returned to California to earn money so we could get our feet back on theground. What did I know? I learned right away i...Expand for more
t is more than I could do, but he never came back. We divorced, I tried to make it in Minnesota in town, but teaching positions are passed one generation to the next. I was also trying to raise hes boys, who I love dearly, but when I had to have surgery and Jay (daughter) had pneumonia and I asked him to help it was too much for him. Solong story cut short, Jay and I came back to California alone. Opening another chapter in our lives which I will write about later. I realize that was all pretty full of uff da moments and happenings. Live has been good and sometimes not so good but for the most part Jay and I have lived a pretty good life. I taught at Rita Blair in Cudahy when we first came back to California. I taught fifth grade, took care of the grounds (dirt and some grass); painted, did windows, whatever it took. Rita Blair was by this time a private very small school for lower middle class families trying to offer a less hectic and a more fundamental academic education for their children, my daughter went there as well. Then I realized that I desperately needed to work somewhere that there were benefits. So I went to work for Paramount Unified School District. What a difference than working for LAUSD! After a few months if I walked into the district office people actually knew who I was by name, not by a number!Of course I remember only going once to the Board of LAUSD and that was to try and save my job after the dreaded "pink slips" that they used to hand out to probationary teachers in March. Anyway, I loved working for Paramount. I guess I just loved teaching and having a meaningful impact on children who I was honored to have been entrusted with their growth and development for a year. More to come later.
