Carol's Story
Workplace
Bill and I moved to Texas City and opened Etheredge Real Estate in 1988. Shortly after that, I began the property management part of the business, handling commerical and single-/multi-family (but no apartments!) rental units. Then, in 1990, I took on the first condo association. Now we have 9, with 8 being on Galveston Island. Now we are Etheredge Real Estate/Property Management.
In past years, I did a little of everything. I was a legal secretary at Sawtelle, Goode, Davidson & Troilo for Mike Holbrook and Kirk James. Mike then decided to establish his own firm, so I went with him to Holbrook, Kaufman & Becker. We were primarily real estate law, with clients buying savings & loans, beer distributorships, big stuff. Very interesting.
Somewhere in there I got my paralegal training.
Next place was Rockport, where I didn't do anything for about 3 or 4 months, but lie on the beach in Port Aransas, enjoy my nieces and nephew, and dance! I had very, very short magenta hair for awhile. Looked great with the tan!
I did have to go back to work, not being independently wealthy. I worked for M. Kirby Roberts, ANOTHER attorney, but this one did everything. Daily, I was rubbing elbows with the criminal element in Rockport and Aransas County. Pretty wild, actually. (Kirby did real estate, divorces, wills -- you name it, he di...Expand for more
d it! May he rest in peace.)
Then I decided to go back to school, and after driving across the bridge everyday in Corpus after work to go to CCSU, I decided I would move to Corpus, thereby necessitating a new job (or that same drive over that same bridge!). I took a job at Kleburg, Dyer, Redford & Weil, as a real estate legal secretary and paralegal. All I did was real estate. Did meet some interesting people though, as the Klebergs are King Ranch.
Finished school. Married Bill. Started teaching at Sam Rayburn Middle School -- 6th, 7th, and 8th grade English and 1 6th grade geography class (which I taught like humanities because, man! is geography boring!). Taught for 3 years, then moved with Bill to TC, which brings us to the present.
The early jobs were tending bar at Rosewood Junction in College Station; waiting tables and managing a really nifty little wine bar, also in College Station; working worm corner on a rig; writing term papers; helping my ex-brother-in-law at his tire repair and auto shop in Jack County, TX; ranching; raising and showing registered Angus cattle; working as the Commandant's secretary at Allen Military Academy, a boys' school which used to be in Bryan, TX (I took the job because I got to eat lunch and breakfast); selling Cambridge diet supplement; and whatever else it took to eat, live, and pay the bills!
