Carol's Story

I was known as "Bookie Batten" when I was in school but hated the nickname so I later became known by my legal name, Carol. After graduating from PSHS on Fri. June 3, 1960. Emory May and I got married next Fri. June 10th. We built a home on the Ocala Hwy but leter sold it when we left Palatka in 1968 to attend Baptist Bible Institute in Graceville, Florida. After graduating, I, with a Music diploma; a major in Piano and minor in Organ, we moved to Hattiesburg, Ms. where Emory attended Wm. Carey College. I worked in Big Yank Sewing Factory to help him get through school. There I earned my PHT (putting hubby through). He planned to go to an archeological dig and attend Tel Aviv Uni, but I announced that I was pregnant before his graduation. We left Hattiesburg and moved to Collins, Ms. Emory attended New Orleans Theological Seminary while I remained in Collins with our new son. Emory still planned to attend Hebrew Uni. but I announced that I was pregnant again so he never attended another school! We lived in Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Montana, Oregon, and the Fiji Islands, where we served as Missionaries, building churches, helping replant crops and rebuild homes after typhoons. I taught music to East Indian and Fijian children and English as a Second Language in an Australian College. We visited Hawaii, Singapore, Rome, London, Australia, Thailand. After retiring, we moved back to Ms. ...Expand for more
abt. 3 years ago and are renovating an 1885 Victorian farmhouse and planting abt. 1/4 acre of trees and flower gardens, plus stocking a 1/4 acre pond. Our daughter, Carlisa, lives in Oregon with her husband and 3 sons, 7,9 & 10 yrs old. Our son is a professional Jazz singer/ pianist. He has been and continues to travel all over the world entertaining. I play a little piano, organ and fiddle for my own enjoyment. I have written and published my autobiography, "All My Love, Mama" and have also written a novel, "Bethany Waiting", which I haven't had published because my extra money is usually spent on plants, flowers or trees. I belong to the local Garden Club, write some poetry and songs and do some painting. I love people and would consider myself to be conservation, old-fashioned and patriotic... I like antiques and guess I'm a romantic too... love anything nostalgic, beautiful, soft, kind and affectionate. I like animals. Love watching the squirels, birds and deer in my yard and feeding the fish in our pond. I like dogs but don't like barking, so I prefer cats. I always wanted to be a wife/mother when I grew up. My family and friends thought as I did, that it was a simple idea. As it turns out, they were as wrong as I was.. it was/is VERY exciting! If I were given a chance to relive any part of my life, I don't know of anything I would change... except become a more serious student.
