Carol's Story

Life Lately I play medieval music. I'm in a group that performs 2-3 times a year. It's a blast. My biggest recent achievement is surviving cancer. I still do research in molecular biology, but I'm thinking of retiring soon so I can spend more time out in the forest and on the rivers, where I like to hike, raft, and kayak. I do yoga. I'm something between buddhist and Wiccan. I march to my own drummer. Hey, I am my own drummer! College I was at UT Austin for 10 years ('65-'75)! I majored in microbiology, but quite a few of my friends were in music. When I was a sophomore we had the tower sniper. Before grad school I worked in the biochem dept. and got lots of good ...Expand for more
experience and started my long list of amusing lab anecdotes. During grad school my major prof, Derek Hoare, died, and I moved over to Dave Gibson's lab. I was one of his first Ph.D.'s. Austin had a population of about 500,000 then and it was a great place to live. I go back there now and it seems too big! Workplace After I retired from doing research in microbiology, I found a new career as a tactile graphics specialist. I transcribe textbooks and other materials into braille. I specialize in technical texts such as mathematics, complete with graphs and figures in raised dots. It involves art and science--my two favorite areas. I can also read and write in braille.
