Carol's Story

Updated 01/28/2012: Some of the best times I had in High School was meeting each and every one of my pictured friends in our 1974 yearbook! I remember how much excitement we had as we anticipated what life would be after we graduated from our beloved Novato High. We were all a little apprehensive, but we knew we would succeed in something we aspired to accomplish. After I graduated from HS, I went to what we all referred to as "Tinker Toy Tech" or College of Marin. Remember that? One of my best friends, Cathy Coffman (married: Bienati) and I were studying general education classes at the time. So much going on in my life then. Thought I knew it all. Soon after that I was married to a Vietnam Veteran in the U.S. Army. I am still with the guy! 36 years now. Wow! We have two sons, who have grown up to fine young men and pursuing their life ambitions too. They are not married nor do they have any children. I currently live, work, and attend college close to Notre Dame, IN. Find me on Facebook: Carol Day, Ivy Tech Community College, Work at Notre Dame University, Kitchen Staff. Yah...that's me. :-) Below still applies and was posted 08/2010: I am going to college studying Hospitality Management. I live in Mishawaka, IN with my husband, Gordon Day. We have been married since 1976. Gordon is retired Army since 1988. We own a beautiful home in Mishawaka and we have two sons, Casey (30) and Dane (34). I have worked and lived in Europe, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Indiana since I graduated from Novato H.S. in 1974. I always wanted to be a positive role model for others when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a perfect choice and idea. As it turns out, they were right!. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have a good attitude, professional style, and good people to work with to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My father, Robert Craft, Sr., is my hero. He has been my inspiration and mentor since I was just a wee girl. My dad started his business out of the back of our family station wagon way back in the day (1960's) when he had lost his job as a used car salesman and had five kids to provide for. Since then, there has been no stopping him! Listen to this... He is in his 80's now (!!) and he still gets up early in the morning, walks to the bus stop close to our home, rides it to work, works as a printing broker in San Francisco and keeps up with everything it takes to run a successful business still to this day! Cool. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Candy Matson, because we were Mascots together in 1971 - 1972. Loved those days and Candy...if you're out there, please contact me. I love dance, food, friends, fun, weddings, family gatherings, anything that brings community to us in a friendly setting. Dance: Jazz and ballet, social and belling dancing are all fun stuff for me. Food: I am studying to be an Exec. Chef and Hospitality Manager in a great setting. Friends: I love them all! Weddings: I love the Reception mostly. The Wedding part is fun and spiritually moving. The Reception of the wedding... you can find me in the middle of the dance floor trying to learn some new dance moves. I am only 21 (??) after all. Family Gatherings: When I can make them, I do make it there because you never know when you can see them again...or not at all. So I always make those a priority. Attending to Community: If I can inspire people to come together for the mere pleasure of a good time, I will do it. I love what that brings to the table for everyone...a sense of community and belonging to something bigger than they are. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel my kitchen and add on a dinning area. My dream home would be in Colorado, Oregon or Washington State. I love Calif. but cannot afford it till I am successful or achieve extra $. So, for now...in one of those states. My least favorite place to live would be where I am at this time (Indiana). Patience is the best thing I have learned. Maturity does bring quite a few surprises. We just must learn to wait for them and not force things so much. I wish and pray I accrue more patience...Hmmmm. If I won $100 million, I'd give most of it to me and my husband, then spend the rest on investing for the future, Non-Profit Animal Rescue Associations and Non-Profit Family Advocacy Programs and Associations. My current age is 54. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be non-existent or too old to do anything significant because of the more mature folks that were living around me then. I was so completely uninformed. Now I am an College Student in Culinary and Hospitality Management. My most favorite job ever was when I was a Lead Event Specialist or Demonstrator. I have had several years experience in that field now. Since there are not great supervisors in that field in this area, I am only attending College for this time. I really did love my Event positions though. My best friend would tell you I'm a nut, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as charismatic. My best friends know who they are and I love them dearly. They are all awesome and we still to this day call each other and stay in touch. I dress in comfy clothing. Elegant, but sophisticated. I share my home with my husband and my five cats, 50 gallon fish tank full of Mollies and one bird, which I find overwhelming at times. I have two ballroom dance trophies on my shelf at home. I have had several years of training in dance. Mainly Jazz and ballet. Couple years of dance training in social/ballroom dancing too. My trophies are from a ballroom dance program that I joined when I moved to Northeast Indiana. I hope to be back home in California. I'm going to get there by studying for my degree in Culinary and Hospitality Management. My long time be...Expand for more
st buddies are Cathy Coffman (now Bienati) and Colleen Haught (now Acio). We have been best buddies since we were in School together in the 60's. We have remained friends since then. Through all the ups and downs, over and outs, we have been there for each other. My first job was at Emporium, San Rafael, CA, where I got paid nothing to work as a salesclerk. What I remember most about it is how utterly boring it was to work there. I remember while growing up in Novato, CA, I and Cathy Coffman would enroll in the Western Weekend Parade that took place every June. We did that for years. Many times we dressed up in some type of theme and rode our horses in the Parade. What a trip! I always wanted to be a person who was interesting to others when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a good idea, but I still needed more direction in life. Needing more of an idea and some direction, things went a bit of a normal path for me after High School. As it turns out, I married my husband, Gordy, at the young age of 20 or 21... Oh, heck! I know it was a long time ago. Yes--were still married too. Do you believe it? Whoa! Well, anyway... I am attending college here in Mishawaka/South Bend, Indiana, studying Culinary and Hospitality Management. Career change! Food is cool and I love to help people with solutions to meal preparation, great recipe suggestions, getting organized for parties, making great food, nutrition, and all kinds of aspects of Culinary. The Hospitality Management part was because I love to plan Events. That's all about me. Right in the middle of the whole orchestra, having a blast and putting things together for everyone to have a wonderful time. I love to blow off steam after a long, drawn out ordeal by going out with friends at my favorite Piano Bar in town (I posted some pictures on this page) or meeting for a chat with them doing something fun. Unfortunately, that place has closed due to the downturn in the Economy. So, I stay busy having fun at the College and being around my good friends who are like me out in this area. I am not too much of a sports watcher. I am a "sports doer," though. How about you? Do you love to watch football with your friends when you get together? I love sports, but I want to be a participant mostly. After all, I am only "21" still (hee-hee!). Funny how life turns out for us... Some of the things I have learned as I became more mature: 1. Say "I understand what you are saying" while someone needs you to listen, and mean it. 2. Conduct random acts of kindness for no reason. It makes the world a better place. 3. Try not to drink too much coffee in the morning so I don't talk like an insane person. 4. Always, have fun and don't let the "dull drums" get me down. Oh... there are plenty more too. Updated as of 10/08/10: OK... now you got this far in my long dissertation, I finally am updating today on what's been shakin' in my neck of the woods. Still going to College, studying Culinary and Hospitality Management. When I grow up and graduate by 2011 - 2012 (I go part-time to College so it is taking a bit, alright? Yah.), I would like to be an inspirational role model and mentor for mom's, dad's, children and whomever would like to be inspired by food, events, magic and fun. I believe I will be in business for myself since I am a high achiever in that arena. Seems like since I have been in this neck of the woods (Mid-West), I tend to make people nervous out here. No offense to the people in Indiana is meant here, but many of them our age (which is young in my book) do not like people like me "rocking the boat" and asking more out of them than what they are used to. I have been out in this area for 11 years now...that is plenty of time to have figured the group out and I just feel it is better that I pursue my own entrepreneurial dreams. Studying what I am now since 2009, it has opened my eyes to what is possible at my young, impressionable age of (???)...21. I do not feel older than 21, so I'm sticking with that story. My friends I have made out here are much like my friends I have in California. These friends are cool and charismatic just like most of you in Calif. I am thankful I went back to College to find most of them. Since I last posted information on Classmates.com, I have had the opportunity to learn quite a bit about the people of Indiana. All I can say is they are home-spun, conservative, like where they are and usually pretty friendly. They are the type of people who will help their neighbor who is in a bind or needs a cup of sugar to finish out a recipe of cookies or whatever. They are special souls, most of them. The elders, over 70 years old, pretty much do not like anyone to shake their tree. The younger-elders, over 55 - 70, are trying to figure out where they are in the whole scheme of things and stay to themselves quite a bit. The middle-aged, over 30 - 55, are usually more with the times, up to date on what is happening in the world today, usually pretty nice, but don't like things moving too fast...like Blogging and Text Messaging. Now the group that is younger, 15 to 30ish, that is who I really like out here. I am more like them because their minds are not stuck in a rut yet. They are thinkers, movers and shakers, most of them. They are my peer group. The previously mentioned age range, I have some friends in those categories but they are the people who are movers and shakers as well (Yah, I'm just saying...). So that's about it for this moment. Email me a note to say hello if you care to. I am in classes most of the week, but ask that you be patient with me to get back to you. If I respond quickly, that's awesome! Take care and will be posting again soon. (Check out my pics I've added to my profile when you get a chance.) Thanks for reading! Carol Day (Craft)
