Carol Dalenko:

CLASS OF 1961
Ferndale, MI

Carol's Story

Hi. I graduated from Ferndale High in 1961 and went to the University of Michigan, graduated in 1965, taught high school for a year outside Detroit (Belleville High), then returned to the U-M. I married in 1963, but we never had children (his choice). We moved to Champaign-Urbana, Illinois in 1969 where we both were on the faculty at the U-Illinois. I was on the physics faculty, and also developed interactive computer-based lessons on the PLATO computer system. I continued to work on my Ph.D. in absentia, then divorced in 1973. Never remarried - almost a couple times, but then chickened out. I moved to Baltimore, MD in 1976 to work at Control Data's computer-based education learning center until 1979, then free-lanced as a computer analyst before retiring before I was 40 yrs old. I always loved horses and didn't understand why we couldn't have a pony in our backyard on a 1/4-acre lot on W. Troy in Ferndale. I've always had a dog or two as pets, and now have horses on a 20-acre farm in North Carolina outside Raleigh. I've dabbled in politics, thinking I could make an honest difference to fight corruption, but got burned by the politically biased news media after nearly unseating a veteran politician in the NC Senate. I studied law, but decided I didn't want to be a lawyer, but I would like to write a book to help DIYers. // I remember the old Lincoln High on 9 mile rd, the high ceilings and tall windows, which closed after my freshman year (1958). My best memories are riding my bicycle around Ferndale to visit my friends Judy Colvin, Nancy Na...Expand for more
ss, Norma Lundeen, Shirley Kreiger, Pat Farrari, and going to the Detroit Zoo at 10 mile rd or the little park about half-way there. Judy made waffles with ice cream and pancake syrup for us one day - best ever, and she taught me to play Fur Elise on the piano (still remember it). We went to the State Fair once, but we got separated and horribly lost. That's when I saw my first arabian horse - so beautiful. Holmes Collins and I met at a bowling lane one Saturday. I had a crush on him, but i don't think he knew it. We sat near each other in biology class. He lived in the PR (Pleasant Ridge) side of town, the other side of 9 mile rd. I was friends with an older fellow for the last couple years of high school, mostly doing things together with my parents, like going to my father's farm near Lake St. Clare. His parents raised the biggest plumpest strawberries ever, and I ate so many one summer, I got hives. My parents separated after I got married. My mother died of cancer at 62. I took care of my invalid father at home for 6 yrs after he had a stroke in 1995. Now it's just me, my 2 dogs, and several horses. I dabble in Real Estate, mostly just keep my license active, and spend most of my time taking care of the horses, the farm, and giving riding lessons. I have a retail store with horse tack and riding attire reconstructed out of an old farm building next to the barn. The best part of my day is when people visit. I enjoy remodeling projects on the big old house, built in 1880. My "sanctuary" is in Virginia, where I hope to move one day.
