Carol's Story
Unsure of where I fit in after high school, I went to MBTI Business College for court reporting. After graduation, I worked as a free-lance and official verbatim court reporter for the next 25 years. I mainly worked in a four county radius; Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee & Washington Counties and at times traveled throughout the State of Wisconsin and to Washington D.C. to help out in backlogged areas. I met and worked for many of the county and circuit court judges preparing Jury Charges, Decisions, personal and private correspondence, swearing in witnesses, marking exhibits, to name a few of the many duties of a court reporter along with taking the verbatim testimony and motions that came into the courtroom and transcribing same. It was an exciting and fast-moving daily array of work. My favorite courts were generally the Circuit Court criminal verses the Civil Courts. Criminal court was generally faster moving, more interesting, chaotic, high energy, high stress, filled with unique people and situations versus the civil courts which were more orderly and could often be filled with hours and hours of dull, uninteresting motions.
As a free lance reporter, I traveled to depositions generally at an attorney's office but sometimes on site to a factory, a home, an office and even to a prison cell, took testimony and transcribed those depositions, which are generally exploratory fact finding and information gathering depositions before court trials take place.
While working as a court reporter and raising our girls, I spent many years volunteering at church and school working on many committees and fund raising events & galas. I created, organized & chaired a ballet-tumbling group for children, and created, organized and chaired the annual Fireman's fund raising dance to help raise funds for the Merton Athletic Association and our local volunteer firemen. I am amazed and humbled that those programs remain in existence now 40 plus years later. The Fireman's Annual fundraising Dance has raised considerable amounts of money for the much needed equipment and vehicles that the fire/ambulance department uses along with providing much needed athletic equipment and supplies for the Merton Athletic Association activities, their families and children.
After retiring from court reporting, and our girls now grown and gone from home, I opened a gift and home decor boutique in Oconomowoc which was the joy of my life. It was beautiful, fun, exciting, unique, with wonderful gals that worked for me... but over time I also developed a very painful, chronic spinal injury that made it impossible for me to continue. Regretfully I closed my business and ended up with a botched back surgery that ruined nine years of my life ..... m...Expand for more
uch too long of a story to tell. Fortunately in 2018 a gifted neurosurgeon took a chance to help me when many others said it couldn't be done safely, and successfully corrected the previously botched back surgery and I now, praise God, am pain free and finally able to walk normally.
On September 19, 2019, my husband and I celebrate 49 years of marriage. We met shortly after he came out of the Navy and the Vietnam (War). He was working in the highway road construction business. After working many years in the business, he went into partnership with another experienced friend and they began their own paving company building roads & highways. He retired from the industry with over 50 years experience in June of 2018.
We have been blessed with four daughters who grew up to be: An Accountant, a Legal Assistant to a top CEO of an International law firm, a nurse practitioner who works in pediatric trauma, and a surgical nurse. We have also been blessed with one granddaughter, who aspires to be a nurse practitioner like her mom & one grandson, who aspires to be a veterinarian. We are excited to see what the future will actually bring forth for them.
We recently sold our home in Oconomowoc and moved to our lake home in northern Wisconsin. We spend summer through New Years here in the state and winter in our home in the warm Arizona sunshine.
WHAT I LOVE MOST IN LIFE: People. I love people and helping others . I also enjoy singing, dancing, humor, and harmony in life. I love being happy.
WHAT I HAVE LEARNED: You can be successful at anything in life, even if you dislike it; but you do the best when you find what you absolutely love.
We ALL have been gifted with unique talents and abilities. Life is best when we discover who we are and what we can offer the world. Sometimes we know what we're good at and sometimes it comes as a "total surprise."
WHAT I LEARNED THE MOST ABOUT MYSELF: That I'm a right-brained dominant, an out-of-the box thinker and a problem solver. I love working with people, love change, and I especially love bringing out the best in others. I enjoy creating, organizing, orchestrating & successfully completing a project and then moving on to the next challenge.
REGRETS: Listening to my "Debbie Downer Guidance Counselor" who offered no help or advice other than to get married & have children.... (presented as if those are brainless tasks).... and not being allowed to participate in after-school activities. I would have loved to have been involved in the many after school activities/sports clubs offered to the students.
MOST GRATEFUL FOR: God, His Word and everything He has allowed me to have and enjoy. Praise God for his enduring love and patience.
