Carol's Story
Well, since high school I graduated from UMSL, taught music for 10 years in Ferguson-Florissant, got married, got divorced, taught music in Clayton School District for four years, got married, taught at UMSL for 16 years. I hurt my back pretty badly in 2004, resulting in disability. Got divorced again. I lived with my Dad in the house I grew up in. He was in his ninety's and starting to need more help. I married Bruce Tolbert in 2010, and we moved to St. Peters MO in 2011. Dad lived with us until his passing in 2012.
Five back surgeries have landed me on disability, but I do teach piano, and I do some accompanying. I have been the accompanist for the Fort Zumwalt South High choirs for about seven years, which I love.
My back problems have affected my hobbies.I play Native American flute when I get the time to practice. I'm an independent researcher on the subject of the Lewis and Clark expedition and all things related. ...Expand for more
I do historical re-enactments of that period as well. I loved gardening, and I continue that as much as possible, growing veggies in containers with stands so I don't have to bend over, and growing things in pots.
In 1994 I got my first dalmatian, Sam. I have owned one or two dals ever since. I fell in love with the breed. Right now we have Sasha, who is seven years old. We also have Sheba, a labrabull. Keeping up with them probably keeps us both more fit! They run the household!
After a broken humerus bone that took three surgeries, I finally retired from both teaching piano and accompanying. My husband Bruce also battled with Stage IV prostate cancer but is in remission now. Still learning how to “do” retired! But I’m learning to really enjoy it.
Life has been quite a journey since high school. Lots of good things, lots of tough things I didn't think I could get through. I wouldn't have made it without my faith in God.
